William Randolph Uoarst. the Democratic aud Independence league candidate for Governor, had his attention diractfd today to-day to a published statement by P. II. ALcL'arren, Democrat ic orKauizalion loader of Brooklyn, (hat if ".Mr. Hearst persists in having Independence league candidates nominated in Kings county there will be a plurality of 75,000 against him in Brooklyn. "Tho question of whether Brooklyn goes 75,000 one way or (he other is for tho citizens of Brooklyn to decide, and not for Mr. Mc'-arreu to docido,'" said Mr. Hearst. "I have the utmost consideration con-sideration for the wishes of the citizens of Brooklyn, and none whatever for tbc wishes ol' Mr. McCarren. In placing an Independent- ticket in the Held in Brooklyn we arc doing what we believe to be (or tho best interests of tho citizens citi-zens of Brooklyn. Mr. !McCarrcn, by calling hinmelf a Democrat, does not make hinit!!i' a Democrat. If ho should call himself an honest: man it would not make him an honest man. If ho should call hh tirkt't good ticket it would not make it a good ticket. As a matter of actual fact, tho McCarren ticket is notoriously unfit and should not commund the buppovt of houeat Democrats or honest Independents. "I am a Democrat, but a Jefferson Democrat, not a corporation Democrat, and I cannot allow a hired agent of the corporations, like McCarren, to define my Democracy or dictate unworthy can-didatea can-didatea for me lo support." Mr. .McCarren said he had no reply to make to Mr. Hearst's statement. Asked regarding hia communication of yesterday with Mr. Hearst, he said: "1 have sent no letter to Mr. Hearst, but T did send a messenger to him yesterday yes-terday with instructions to inform him of the proba'blo result in Kings County Coun-ty if he should oppose the Democratic i'udiciary ticket in the Second Judicial ! District. I believo I did suggest that the County would give Hughes about 75,000 majority in tho event of his bolting tho Democratic ticket. I did nut tell him to uso the words, You do this at your peril.' f made no throats, hut merely stated a. few facts which I thought mi'crht interest. Mr. Hearat. "There is nothing I can say to the reported statcmeut of Mr. Hearst concerning con-cerning his threat to put. a third judicial judi-cial ticket in the field in King3 and the other counties comprising the Second judicial district. "Ae to the probability of the gen- I eral committee voting to leave Hearst's name off the head of the ticket, the I committee will have to decide that." ! The Senator was asked: "Will the committee have precedents for leaving off the namo of tho head of tb State ticket'" , He replied: "My answer lo that is that thore is no precedent for the head 1 of thr ticket, bolting the party." |
