Show PROBING INSURANCE Special Grand Jury of New York Begins Its Work. NEW YORK, iay 7 Tho special grand jury, which Is to Investigate Insurance matters and especially campaign contributions, contri-butions, was empaneled today. District Attorney Jerome, who asked for this jury, was present with several of hts assistants when It was sworn. Justice Scott of the criminal branch of the Supreme court in his charge sold: Charge to Jury. "Your attention will be called to a series ser-ies of alleged crimes which have occasioned occa-sioned much discussion In the public press and In various financial circles. The Legislature Leg-islature lias passed laws remedying, so far as It can, all past mistakes. Your duty Is to Inquire if any crime has been committed under the law as It stood before be-fore the Legislative action. "Will Have Assistance. "You will have the active and enorgotlc osslstnnco of the District Attorney and you are entitled at all times to call upon him for assistance nnd advice. You nro not to be swayed by suspicion or clamor In any of your work." Few Witnesses Examined. When the Jury adjourned for the day It was announced that the only witnesses who. hud been examined were Isaac F. Lloyd, third vlco-prosldent of the Mutual Life, and Edward R Rodgers of tho firm of Lysandor W. Lawrence & Co., of tho printers for that company. Other witnesses wit-nesses will be heard Wodnosday, to which day adjournment was taken. Hay Dodge One Point. It was said tonight that the special grand Jury would not bo called upon to Investigate the political contributions mado by the Equitable because theso contributions con-tributions had all come from what was known as the "yellow dog" fund, which fund amounting to JGSO.OOo and standing In tho names of J. . Alexander, then prue-Ident prue-Ident of the Equitable, and Thomas D.
