Show INQUEST ON REMAINS OF WJUJAM SAVAGE Coroner Looks Into Killing at the State Mental Hospital. Special to Th Tribune. PROVO, May 21. At the Inquest held today at tho State Mental hospital over tho remains of William Savage, tho Insane In-sane patient who was killed Sunday evening even-ing by William MyorB, another Inmate, It dovelopcd that Myers, while growing moro Impatient over his conllnement, hns never attempted to harm any one previous pre-vious to this, except on one occasion, when he struck at another patient with his list. Myers Is Questioned. When questioned by ShorliT Hnrmon, In the prcaenco of the Jury. Myers, In nn undertone and with a almplertnlnded expression ex-pression on his face, said: "I didn't hit him very hard; I could havo hit much harder." When told that Savago wns dead, Myers said: "No, ho ain't; I didn't kill him." Securely Handcuffed. The maniac, while In tho presence of tho officers and Coroner's Jury, was handcuffed hand-cuffed with a pair of leather mitts, and these were securely fastened to a bolt which was locked around tho waist. Dr. Caldcr Informed Myers thnt because be-cause of what he had dono he would bo thus fastened for some time. To this Myers replied: "I'll havo the soldiers after 'cm; I'll kill them all off." He seemed to have the Idea that everybody every-body around the building.1 whether Inmates In-mates or attendants, aro responsible for his being confined there. Savago Was Strong Man. Savage, tho man killed, was a big, strong, robust man, and In all probability probabil-ity went insane from the effects of previous pre-vious Injury which Is plainly discernible elnco the hair has been removed from hla head. Ho had been gradually growing more vicious and waa pronounced Incurable. Incura-ble. Dllly, tho patient first struck by Myers, has a bad scalp wound, but Is In no danger. dan-ger. Ho Is an epileptic and when these spells aro not on him. Ih perfectly rational ra-tional and fully realizes his condition. Verdict of the Jury. Sheriff Harmon has made a thorough examination of tho case, and was ono of the witnesses boforo tho Coroner's Jury-After Jury-After examining all tho attendants and ofllcers of the Institution the Jury returned re-turned a verdict to the following effect: Authorities Not Blamed. "That William Savage came to his death on tho 20th day of May, 1906, through a blow 3truck on his head from a plocc of window sill In the hands of William Myers, an Insane patient at tho Stato Mental hospital. We further llnd that no blame can bo attached to any person In charge at said Institution." |
