Show SALT LAKE CITY AS A GREAT RAILROAD CENTER. That was most welcome news which came from Denver yesterday respecting the Moffat road. Thi- Onre ("any n resistance has been overcome, the united states abandons its effort to hold the canyon for reservoir purposes, and Mr. Moffat will have the use of It for his rail-Way rail-Way route This settles In favor Of Salt Lake a very serious problem that at one time threatened delay In the construction of this mopt Important railroad line, which is building from Denver to this city. Mr Moffat has pushed his road to this side Of the main rang-, using a temporary switchback to cross It. He now. on the news that Gore Canyon will brief br-ief t open for him. orders the main tunnel through the range to be pushed, and Ihe .suspended contracts to be let at once. And tie directs work to be begun at once, at both ends of the line. This me;;ns mucfi to this city. The plan of Mr. Moffat contemplates the completion of his road to Salt Lake In about two years, or say January 1. 10, or the spring of that year It will be the most direct route between Denver and Salt Lake City. It Will open up an entirely new region, hitherto practically shut off from direct communication with the world, though rich In minerals and In coal. It will afford us a new- and convenient short line to the Bast. It Is supposed that this line Is backed by the Rock Island system. Its construction means that this company wants to make Its coast connections at Salt Lake, where It can have the choice of four connections westward the Salt Lake Route, the Southern Pacific, the Western Pacific, anil the Oregon Short Line Instead of being forced to the one connet lion as now at Denver. Nothing 1? more certain than the advantage which this will be to the Rock Island road Nothing Is more certain, also, than that other railroad systems the Burlington (already promised), the Chicago & Northwestern, the Chicago, Milwaukee Mil-waukee & St, Paul, and all the others, must also build here for the same advantage. This ls all the more assured from the fact that these last-named last-named roads all have lines built far this side of Omaha, w here they are now obliged to make their coast connections The building of the Salt Lake Route wan thus a factor in making this city a great railroad center, far beyond anticipation. The certainty of the construction of the Western Pacific emphasized the Importance of this city as a center and connecting point. The great railroad day ls dawning, and the city Will profit enormously by the construction which Is inevitable. All aboard for the Greater Salt Lake' |
