Show BIG CABLE SHIP ASHORE OFF CANSQ Vessel Meets With Ill-Luck Off the Nova Scotia Coast. CANSO. X. S.. Aug. IS. The cable steamer Colonia Is ashore off this port In bad position. Attempts to float her have failed. It Is thought the steamer has been badly damaged. The Colonia left London August 5 for the purpose- of laying a cable for the Commercial Cable company from Canso, X. S.t to AVatcrvllle, Ireland, a distance of 2400 miles, Sho arrived off tho Nova Scotia port on August 1C and preparations were made for landing tho end of the cable. Early today tho shoro end of the cable was token ashore and the steamer waa to proceed eastward to Watcrvllle, letting .out tho cable as she steamed to the other side. The new cable Is to form a part of tho Commercial Cablo company's com-pany's system-. The Colonia Is tho largest cable vessel nlloat, being of 7976 tons gross register Sho Is a twin-screw vessel and Is built of steel, having been constructed in 1JKG at Newcastle, England. The telegraph construction con-struction and maintenance company of London Is thu Colonia s owner She is 4S7 feet in length. |
