But thefeb differences havo been tf' ? 5, overcome and nothing now stands In tho way" of the Government proceeding with its work Bear Lake a Storage Hcservoir. The plans already well formulated contemplate con-template making of Bear lako a storago reservoir, In which not. less than 350.CO0 acre-feet of flood waters of tho Bear river and some of its tributaries may be Impoundod during the spring months for summer use. Canals of the most modorn type will be constructed for conveying the waters from lake and river as they aro needed. Tho department estimates that tho total amount of water uvailnblo under tho filings fil-ings that Is, the amount herctoforo unappropriatedIs un-appropriatedIs about E00.000 acre-feet, or sufficient to Irrigate 105.000 acres of land, Tho amount of land proposed to be Irrigated Irri-gated under this project is about 120,000 acres, of which GO.000 acres nr In Bannock Ban-nock nnd Oneida counties. Idaho, and 70,000 acres In Cache nnd Box Elder counties, coun-ties, Utah. Tho estimated cost of the works complcto Is 52.CO0.O0O. Feasibility Almost Assured. Investigations to determine the possibilities possi-bilities of converting Bear lako Into a storago reservoir havo been in progress over since tho reclamation law was passed, In 1902. The act of the Government Govern-ment filing upon the waters Indicates that tho project has a splendid show of feasibility. The plan Is one of vast extent ex-tent and tho benellts to bo derived aro correspondingly great. That tho people will support It should go without saying, and tho noxt move will doubtless bo to secure definite action on tholr part. Profesosr Gcorgo L. Swendscn of tho local reclamation office, when asked in-regard in-regard to tho filings, said: "Tho filings by tho Government do not mean that the project will bo constructed, construct-ed, nor do thoy mean that the work of Inaugurating the schemo Is complete. Tho peoplo will doubtless express their views at an early dato and sooner or later It Is hoped that this project will devolop Into one of the greatest In the lntcnnountaln region, and with tho others In process of development complete tho Irrigation of all the lands of tho sections concerned " Second Filing in Utah. The filing on Bear river Is the second to bo made by tho Government In Utah under tho Reclamation Act. tho other having been made on tho "Weber river a few weeks ngo. The two projects will be qulto closely allied. In fact they may In, places overlap one nrtuther as to the terri tory covered. Tho projects will pretty well cover the Irrlgablo lands of northern Utah, as far south as Salt Lnko county. The lands covered In tho two counties of Idaho, on account of elevation and climatic cli-matic conditions, will be adapted to little beyond tho raising of alfalfa and small grains, but most of tho Utah lands, nre well adapted to frult-ralsing and diversified diversi-fied farming, and will bo very valuable when watered. Tho map printed on this pago gives a good general idea of the Bear river project, proj-ect, tho shaded parts showing tho lands to be Irrigated by It. |
