Show THE RAISING Of DATES. The report from the Southwest, of tho efforts of the agricultural department of the University of California to raise the date tree on the desert, Is most Interesting. In-teresting. The climate .seems fitting for that culture, and no doubt Professor A. V. Stubenraush, In charge of the work, Is justified in his expectation of success in raising the date palm at Mecca station, as their place of experiment experi-ment is called. The date has In past times been tho means of supporting the densest populations popu-lations of the great empires. It was, with millet, the support of the immense im-mense ancient populations of the lower Tigris and Euphrates valley?, a region which could send forth armies comparable compar-able In numbers with the flights of the grasshoppers which sometimes made famine conditions In those lands. If the date can be successfully grown on the Colorado desert (there is ample water in the great river for Irrigation purposes, pur-poses, if it 13 utilized,) then a heavy population there Is sure. |
