PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 10. In a whirlwind whirl-wind fight thnt was scheduled to go bIx rounds at Industrial hall tonight Terry McGovcrn had Eddie Hanlon so budly beaten that thc police stopped tho contest con-test In tho fourth round. At thc time the city authorities Interfered the former champion was raining blows on tho prostrate pros-trate form of Hunlon, who was hanging on tho ropes. Tho contest wa9 a terrific one. Up to tho fourth round McGovcrn had a unade tho better of It. Jn the fourth Hanlon. seeing an opening, sent a left hook hard to thc chin and the former champion went down for the count, and to many of tho spectators It looked as though McGovcrn was out of It. Hanlon. however, throw discretion to the wind and tried to put In a linlshlng blow. He fought so recklessly that it proved his downfall, McGovein going at him so viciously that almo9t before be-fore thc spectators realized It, he had the Callfornlan helpless . In tho llrnt round each man slugged with both hands, during which McGovcrn hooked his left to the neck and sent In two uppercuts. making Hanlon break ground. McGovern uppercut Hanlon with a right, nnd then hooked a hard left to tho Callfornlan's chin. McGovern followed fol-lowed this up with a right and left swing to thc head and Hanlon retaliated by putting four straight lefts to McGovcrn's faco and a right swing to the head as tho boll rang. McGovern started off with a rush in tho second. He sent u left to tho face, a left and right uppercut to thc Jaw and a right and left swing to the body, but no he delhcred tho last blow ho caught a swinging right hook on tho chin. Hanlon Han-lon followed this up with two lefts to tho face and a hard right swing to the chin. McGovern got In two hard right uppercuts to the chin and received a left hook on the Jaw In return. Both men took things easier at the opening of the third round. McGoverq landed three hard swings on tho Jaw, but Hanlon fought him back and made Terry clinch. Another rapid exchange of blows was followed by Hanlon giving McGovern" a severe left uppercut to tho chin, which staggered McGovern. McGovern Instantly Instant-ly recovered and sent left and right to the face and repeated tho punches. They exchanged right swings to tho Jaw as tho bell rang. McGovern camo to the center of tho ring In the fourth round appearing a llttlo weak. Terry swung his left and right to the Jaw and then Hanlon lloorcd McGovern Mc-Govern with a left swing to the chin. McGovern took the count of nine. Ho clinched when ho got on his feet and was nearly out. Ho mado a quick recovery, however, and rained blows on Hanlon and soon had him on the ropes. Tho Callfornlan went down from the offect of right and left swings to tho Jaw. and as soon as ho got up Terry put him on tho ropes, whtrc ho hammered him Into almost a helnless condition. Hanlon's hands were down and he was helpless. A terrific right arm swing put him In a prostrate condition on the ropes and all but out. At this point thc police interfered inter-fered nnd stopped the contest. |
