Show SOME OF THE RAILROAD RUMORS. From several sources In the East comes the rumor that the Gould system, in projecting Its lines to the Pacific coast, will build the Sallna cut-off and use that for Its main line, cutting out Salt Lake altogether. Now this may all be mere speculation, but at the same time those interested in the welfare wel-fare of this city should keep a careful eye to Its Interests. The Western Pacific Pa-cific and other Gould lines will need r I.I - r.mrewa fTA many mimjiutiiro, uwu me uiwv.- - official bodies of the 'county and city should bear In mind 'these rumors when considering requests for franchises. The cpmmcrclal bodies of Salt Lake also might Investigate this matter, for should the Western Pacific run to the south of this -city, it would greatly harm the place. Years ago the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific made the great mistake mis-take In "building the northern line, and they have been realizing the error ever since, while millions have been expended ex-pended In building a new line for the Southern Pacific. Should the Western Pacific and the Gould lines place Salt Lako on a mere spur, the growth of Salt Lake would bo retarded. It cannot be Imagined that Gould would do anything of the sort, owing to his past references to this city; but at the same time, the reports are so persistent that It Is time for Salt Lako to awake from Us lethargy and take such action as will secure, at least, some ofilcial cognlzanco of the matter. Somo of these rumors arise in Ogden, and others In Denver, which may ox-plain ox-plain why they are Gent out. Tho Western West-ern Pacific, however, has ever officially been spoken of as a line from San Francisco tp Salt Lake, and wo are confident that these cities will be Us actual termini. |
