The Salt Lake City library building wllP probably be comploted beforo tho holidays, tho only condition being the arrival of tho torra-cotta trimmings from tho Eafct The building Is being comploted as faet as possible, and in a very short time It will be 'one of tho usual sights of Salt Lake to see people passing up and down the steps, bound to and from library and lecluro room. Tho Modest Grlvor. It will be remembered that this building build-ing and Its grounds wero presented to the city by a man as modest as ho 1b public-spirited, John Q. Packard, pioneer pio-neer and mining man, who gave tho city this magnificent gift valued at $100,000, with the stipulation that Ills name should not be ised In connection with the gift, the name preferred being the "Salt Lake City Public Library." Mr. Packard 1b 75 years old, and was born In New York, removing to Utah in the late 'CO's, and has ever since taken a deep Interest in mining and other Industries In-dustries in the State of his adoption. Is Beautifully Designed. The new building already shows tho beauty of Its design, and, although there is more work yet to be done than has already al-ready been accomplished, Its completion In the near future Is confidently expected ex-pected by Fred Hale, the architect, and the foreman now at work on tho structure. |
