Show AN ITALIAN VISIONARY. Italy evidently has her George Francis Fran-cis Train, though his name is Spadoni. This chap Is srulng the order of Jesuits for compensation he claims the General of that order promised him if he would save the American Catholics from seceding se-ceding from the Romish jurisdiction. Spadoni claims that this secession was on the brink of accomplishment under the lead of Archbishop Ireland and the Paullst fathers, when he conceived con-ceived a brilliant scheme to defeat the plan of secession. This he was able to do by virtue of his exalted position as a correspondent of the New York World, and through his ability as a Journalist In publishing a lot of copies of a paper he called The True American Ameri-can Catholic, and inciting the Pope to a bull against Americanism in the church. One would naturally suppose that a bull against Americanism would have a tendency to drive American Catholics into the very sort of scheme which Spadoni charges upon them. But no; he kept the church Intact, and held the ten million American 'Catholics true to Rome, with his great ability and from his high position. And now, American Catholics will be inquiring, Who the deuce Is Spadoni? We venture to say that not one In a 1 thousand of them ever heard of him, and that not one In a million, or one in the ten millions, ever heard of a scheme to detach the American Catholics Catho-lics from their allegiance to the church of Rome. It is astonishing that so utterly baseless base-less and absurd a suit as this could find lodgment In any tribunal outside of a lunatic asylum. Tho fervid imaginations imagina-tions of some bigoted Europeans as to American Ideas and perils Is something some-thing truly phenomenal. About the next thing we may oxpect to hear Is that some one will complain that America is getting' more than Its share of the blessod sunlight, and that something ought to be done to stop IU |
