Show FEDERAL TROOPS TO GUARD THE RUINS Washington. Feb. S. At the urgent request re-quest of Senator Gorman and upon his plcdgo and that af the Governor of Maryland Mary-land that the Legislature of Maryland would tonight pass a resolution calling upon the National Government for military mili-tary assistance. Lleut.-Gen Chaffee, commanding the general staff, sent telegraph tele-graph orders this afternoon to MaJ.-Gcn. Corbln. commanding tho Department of the East, at New York, to proceed forthwith forth-with to Baltimore and take military command com-mand of the situation thero. Nearly 10CO soldiers have been ordered to servo under him. They nro: Two battalions battal-ions of tho Fifth Infantry, at Plattsburg , barracks. New York; one battalion of the Sixteenth Infantry, at Fort Slocum, N Y.; ono battalion of the Ninth Infantry. Madison barracks, New York; one company com-pany of coast artillery, Fort Howard, Md., and one company of coast artlllcrv. Fort Dupont, Del. These troops arc under rush orders and In all probability will report to Gen. Corbln Cor-bln before night. It Is explicitly stated at the War department de-partment that the national tmops aro to serve as a police force under tho direction direc-tion of the Mayor and local authorities. ' |
