It is a familiar sight at railway stations throughout Japan as the ashes of the country's soldiers come home in small white boxes. To the surprise of many, army officials announced that 18,000 Japanese casualties had resulted in the few weeks of fighting with Soviet troops along the Manchukuo-Outer Manchukuo-Outer Mongolia border before a truce was declared. |
