Show RAWUNSS SERVICES TO UTAH Yesterday morning the Salt Lake Herald IT I an extended editorial evidently evi-dently prepared by the Democratic Stato Central committee attempted to divert the attention of tho voters of tho State from the misrepresentations of Utah by Senator Bawllns by presenting present-ing a number inquiries as to the votes of Mr Kcarns in the Senate The Rawiins shoe Is evidently pinching the foot of the Democratic State committee very hard No answer has been attempted at-tempted by any one representing the Democratic State committee or that party to the various questions which have been propounded by The Tribune to Senator Rawlins or his friends The Herald wants to know why Senator Sen-ator Kearns voted against the proposition proposi-tion to elect United States Senators by direct vote of the people when it knows very well and so does Senator Raw tins that the proposition has never come before the Senate The Inquiry as to Senator Kearnss ote on a census proposition presented by the Democratic Senator from Idaho has no more to do with the questions before the voters of Utah than the flowers that bloom In the spring Senator Sen-ator Kearns voted for tho ship subsidy bill because like all patriotic Americans who desire to continue the expansion of our foreign markets he prefers that American products should go abroad In American ships and be independent of any foreign commercial combinations rather than that they be transported in ships owned by people and Governments Gov-ernments who are now combining combin-ing to reduce our commercial expansion ex-pansion Senator Kearns desires to maintain tho growth of our foreign for-eign markets which exceeds that of any nation on earth and which Is the envy of all foreign peoples Our markets mar-kets halo grown more largely In Asiatic Asiat-ic than any other countries und should our vessels carrying American prod nets enter Asiatic ports refuse to employ em-ploy the natives of those ports to work In any capacity tho countries in which thoso ports are located would naturally natur-ally resent such action and cut short our commercial relations The Democratic State Central committee com-mittee might well devote its time In presenting a catalogue of Scnatbr Raw llnss alleged public services to the State of Utah and his country What has Senator Rawllns ever done to add a penny to the commercial Interests of Utah or tho United States He and his party believe In absolute free trade Under President Cleveland Utahs lead mines could not be worked with profit and were closed down Under the operation oper-ation of Democratic policies all of the protected Industries of Utah Including coal iron lead copper and beet sugar would close down as they could not operate under free trade Certainly Rawlins was opposed to the ship subsidy sub-sidy bill He would have ships manned from lop to bottom with Chinese Italians Ital-ians und all other nationalities enter our ports and transport American products prod-ucts to foreign countries That la I toM to-M he would have these people do this thing If under the administration of the policies he advocates nnd always voted toI we had any markets abroad tQ which we could take our products If there arc any Issues before the voters of Utah they relate to tho maln tenancc of the national policies which have within the past thc years zent abroad more American products and given us a larger balance of foreign trado than our country enjoyed during all of its previous history tht maintenance mainte-nance of our financial policy which has added more to our circulation than wuc added to It during the twentyfive years Immediately preceding the Inauguration Inaug-uration of President McKInley and which has enabled the United States Government to soll 2 per cent bands above par whereas under Democratic policies < 5 and C per cent bonds were sold for far leas than their true value What has Senator Raw llns done to create the present piospeious conditions While Republican Repub-lican Senators have been working for and effecting legislation and the operation oper-ation of policies which have given UB all these blessings Rnwllns has been bawling with stentorian tones against the memories of Utah and other soldiers sol-diers who died for their country In tho PhilIppinesmen who fell defending the flag of our country |
