Manager Man-ager Hughes Chlof Engineer Yard of the Rio Grande system VIc Prc ldcnt G W Kramer of the Utah Fuel company I com-pany and Colorado Midland and General Gen-eral Superintendent Young of the KIo Grande Western Mr Gould was seen shortly after his arrival und talked Interestingly of the system under his control It In I about a year since he was hero last and the good Impressions gained during that visit have been Incrcuhcd As ho 1ms gained a more thorough knowledge of the resources of the Slate which he thinks has such a bright future MORE LINE CHANGES Thc most Important news he gave out in the course of his Interview was the statement that the work of rcctlfjlnr the main line will bo continued I cat from Colton on plans similar toI the extensive work now under way between this city and Tucker It Is the Intention Inten-tion of the Rio Grande to systematically systematic-ally work to make a noticeable reduction in grades and curves from the east slope of the Wasatch to the west slope of the Rocky mountains In Colorado This will call for much nev construction construc-tion and the work will bo kept up until the line Is I in the most perfect physical condition possible to obtain and tho line with the exception of the extreme grades on the mountain passes will be greatly reduced as to grades and curves enabling the company to handle the traffic both freight and passenger In a more economical manner man-ner and allowing greater speed and safely It is my idea said Mr Gould to build up the roads we already al-ready have rathpr than to build new lines THE SALINA CUTOFF When asked about the building of the Green KlverSallna cutoff which tho Chicago papers asserted he said would be built to a connection with Senator Clarks road Mr Gould said that he was evidently misunderstood in the Interview In-terview The rond has been started and will 1 ecntuKlJvfti > built but not Immediately is at present the conditions condi-tions do not demand It but Just as soon na a JLos Angeles road penetrates the region west of Sauna the Rio Grande II I will build the SaUna cutoff and extend I to meet the new road At present though the road from Los Angeles is not In Utah and It will not be necessary neces-sary to meet It at once The cutoff will eventually be built he repealed At present It IK I going up the ean onto on-to come coal minis and the future will determine Just when It will be extended ex-tended Mr Gould Hald he knew absolutely nothing of the Great Orttral or Coos I Bay project and had not heard of It As to the muchlnlkedof extension of I the Missouri Pacific from Lenora Ivan to Denver he said It would he a good line for a short > cut to Dencr but there hod been no determination as to building It although It had bcen considered con-sidered It IH correct that a line Is I lobe lo-be built from the Internat7onal Great Northern to Uoaumdnt Tex and a company had been Incorporated but It was not to go to New Orleans SALT LAKE TERMINAL As to the Salt Lako station Mr Gould l said that owing to the situation here It was held up Indefinitely He had planned and wished to build here a fine union station similar to the one in Denver and all negotiation to that end had been carried on In perfect good faith but the city had taken such action nr to preclude the RIO Grande from going on with a union station sta-tion or building one alone for I the Rio Grande He was willing to do either ns the city was entitled to It but until Huch arrangements could be made to protect thr Rio Grande company nothing noth-ing auld be done If the city would grant the proper franchises the Rio Grande was ready to build one of Its own or go Into a union station as was originally intended but aa St stands now It cannot even build on the land which both companies bought for terminal ter-minal purposes VicePresident and General l Manager Harding of the Rio Grande also stated that the situation had not changed All we ask he said Is selfprotec tion The franchise granted to the Short Line for a track on the east of our track = on Fourth West street prevents pre-vents us from building a ilallon on the ground purchased The matter Is now in the courts and until the matter In l decided nothing can be done The Rio Crando Is 1 ready however to go ahead with the station either alone or with others for a union station We do not care what the other company does but It Is certainly unjust for our line to be deprived of all Its rights In the matter The Short Line could have a track on I tho west of ouni and no harm would result but to place It I on the cast would ruin the land bought for our use We wish to build a station and will do FO at once J If the city will treat us fairly In the matter Our land here can be utilized for freight terminals to good adantage If we can move the depot bulldlngu and have It tree to carry out the plans |
