| Show THE SALT LAKE EWe E-We hope that the citizens of Salt Lake City and Utah read the statement of the business done In the SaltLake postolllco during the past year which was published In tho Now Year edition of The Tribune The postal system has become one of the great departments of the Government and It reaches from the seat of Government at Washing ton to every home In the land It Is more than any other one the peoples department and they feel a personal Interest 1 in Its growth and development I develop-ment Because of Its close association with the dally life of the people It has come to be recognized as a bar meter m-eter which measures the progress ota ot-a community The figures we published yesterday show that during tho past year In the receipts from the sales of stamps alone there was an average increase In-crease of over 1400 a month or about 517000 for the year and the aggregate of stamps sold during the year was about 135060 These show that Salt Lake City la rapidly growing In population popu-lation and In the volume of business transacted There Is shown also an Increase of 17139 in the revenue received re-ceived from newspaper postage When it Is rememberedthat the rate on this class of postage Is 1 cent per pound It i will be seen that tho people of Utah read 17439 pounds more of newspapers In 1901 than they did in 1900 The total receipts for tho year will be nearly 170000 The growth of the Salt Lake postofllcc during tho past four years In the volume of Its receipts and the extension ex-tension of mall facilities has Indeed been remarkable and Is a Just cause of pride to our citizens When we read of stations substations rural delivery routes and other Improvements we realize re-alize the great advance made In tho Salt Lake postal system during the past four years Postmaster Thomas and his efficient assistants ate Justly entitled to the thanks of the community communi-ty for their good work When Senator ICearns and Congressman Congress-man Sutherland recommended the re apponltment of eXGov 1 Thomas as postmaster they only gave formal expression ex-pression to the feeling of the people and business men of Salt Lake City without regard to political affiliations Coy Thomas has been an energetic and progressive postmaster |
