Show SECOND AGHT RAGE Continued from Page 1 both bats made the turn of the first mark as follows TIME AT FIRST MARK Reliance 122130 Shamrock il 1224 Though the Reliance had a lead of three minutes and fifteen seconds she Btlll lacked six seconds of making up the time allowance and the difference of one minute and twentyfour seconds at the start Oficlally the Shamrock Sham-rock IlL was still six seconds ahead of the slippery Yankee craft but It was evident that the latter had won the race barring accidents RELIANCE MAKES GOOD In a breeze varying from four to ten knots an hour she had made good the lime allowance In a tcnmilo thresh to windward and there was every reason to believe that In reaching and run n I n n TlViloTi TtrA VIAI tTVrt ot rtnf naf tH H b points of Balling she would quickly overcome that official six seconds Both captains broke out balloon Jib topsails top-sails when they squared for the second sec-ond turn The wind was so far aft that they quickly decided that Instead of being a broad reach as Intended the course to the turn was a run Splnaker booms were guyed out and the great sails added to the tall reaches ot canvas Stay sallo were taken In and with spinnaker booms guyed well forward the yachts ran away for tho turn RELIANCE DRAWS AWAY Both were holding off their course a bit In order to make their spinnakers draw well and they ran that way for half an hour when the Reliance mothered moth-ered her spinnaker and began to set her stayuall During that time she did not appear to have gained an Inch but Immediately on la luC her true course sho began to draw away Ten mlnuten after the Reliance the Shamrock II also took In her spinnaker set her staysail stay-sail and headed for the mark With the wind over their quarter both yachts made fast time of It but It was apparent appar-ent that the Reliance was gaining They made the second turn as follows AT SECOND TURN Reliance 11750 Shamrock 12115 Tho Reliance wan leading by three minutes fiftyfive seconds having gained forty second In the run across from the first to the second mark She had overcome the time allowance made good the difference at the start and established es-tablished a margin to her credit of thir tyfour seconds with a close reach still to be made there was 3 faint i hope for the challenger RELIANCE ROMPS AWAY Tho Reliance whirled about the mark jjybed over trimmed In her sheets and romped away on a close reach toward Sandy Hook lightship and the Jlnlsh line She was three quiirlera of a mile away before the Shamrock III rounded the mark Both yachts were hcolLnc before a twelve knot wind from south by weot and were nailing at least one mile an hour faster than the wind was blowing I Their sheets were cased just enough to put them t on almost their beAt point I of sailing and one upon which the Re llanco has often demonstrated that she is faster than any racing craft ever built She was heeled Just enough to bring her long overhangs to bear and give her the benefit of her great sailIng sail-Ing length The guide vessel Coastwise I Coast-wise was scurrying alone ahead of her at full speed but the Reliance was i overhauling her Inch by inch and when the lightship hove fair In sight about I two miles awav was not more than a quarter of a mile astern of the guide vessel A mile further on the Coastwise Coast-wise sheered off and gave the Reliance a clear course to the finish As the wind softened the Reliance frst set a baby Jib topsail which the Shamrock had been carrying since turning the second mark and then exchanged ex-changed it for a big reaching Jib topsail top-sail in which the Shamrock promptly followed suit When the Reliance wan a quarter of a mile from the finish line the 1nd died away considerably but the Shamrock Sham-rock came booming alone carrying a splendid breeze and fart ovcrhimllnr the leader I looked as though the British boat was going to get within her time limit but the finish line was too close and the Reliance slipped across it with one minute and nineteen seconds to spare The Shamrock II finished In n softening wind and both boats Hook were taken In tow lo Sandy OFFICIAL TIME Reliance start 110036 finish 21530 elapsed time 31151 1 corrected time 3 1454 Shamrock III start 110200 finish 22010 elapsed time 31810 corrected cor-rected time 31C1C Thursday The next race will be sailed on |
