Show SCHWAB GOT IT ALL I Only One Who Received Dividends in 1903 LETTERS CAUSE LEGAL ROW Nixon Says Schwab Lies but He Says It si Politely Could Have Avoided Shipbuilding Scandal if He Had Not Been Frozen Out by Bethlehem New York Dec 23At the opening of the United States shipbuilding hearing today Counsel Untermyer took UP the subject of the publication of the Alexander correspondence declaring that so far ns he knew neither himself him-self his associate counsel nor any one connected with hl office had anything in do with giving the correspondence to the press He said that he had learned that no less than fifteen copies of the correspondence corre-spondence had been made and distributed dis-tributed broadcast in New York that he himself had had his copy only dur log the examination He said that copies of the correspondence had been offered for sale In newspaper offices Jn New York NEWSPAPER LETTERS Under ouch circumstances he continued con-tinued lilt Is absurd to claim that such correspondence is privileged During Mr Untermyers extended remarks re-marks on the subject he referred to the alleged lack of courtesy shown by opposing counsel and efforts to sidetrack side-track tho real issue 1 in the case At another time he added we shall beery be-ery glad to fjo into this matter WAS MONEY EARNER Alfred Rose an accountant who made an examination of the Bethlehem Steel company for Receiver Smith was culled lie testified that the Bethlehem company which on April 1 1D02 had debts amounting to 712000 had by September 1 1903 emerged en tlroly from debt having paid off 532G 000 since April 1 1U03 and 750000 during dur-ing the month of August In addition to applying this sum to debt deduction Mr Rose stated the Bethlehem company com-pany had since July 21 1903 invested 113020 In the Uruguay Iron company SCHWAB GOT DIVIDEND In regard to net earnings Mr Roses figures showed that the earnings of 330176 In IflOl hart increased to 12G1 801 in 1002 and lCfi2r30 I In 1903 dividends divi-dends of 525000 being paid In 1901 none in 1002 and 250000 in 1903 These last dlvldendfl Mr Rose said went to the shipbuilding company to be applied ap-plied on the 10000000 Issue of bonds heLl by Mr Schwab FROZE NIXON OUTS OUT-S The following authorized statement was given out today at the ofllce of Lewis Nixon Mr Nixon has had many Inquiries as to his Iews relative to Mr Schwabs answer of yesterday and so gave out the following statement There are BO many of his Schwabs statements that run counter lo my recollection that had best be cleared up on the witness stand However that I ever save him or showed to him tL socalled prospectus on June 14th or that I in any way misled him is not only ridiculous but maliciously falser S 0 false-r was anxious to keep the company going Having sold none of my bonds or other securities all my interests were tied up in its success and it would have been a success had any of the aid which a constituent company Is expected ex-pected to give been forthcoming from Bethlehem |
