Show MEN AND HOUNDS FROM STATE PRISON SEEK FUGITIVES Escaped Convicts Baffle Pursuit Pur-suit So Far BELIEVED TO BE IN HILLS I I Armed Posse Still Busily Searching Country Dogs Exhausted Themselves in Vain Search Authorities Say Chase I Will Continue An armed posse of guards from the State penitentiary together with trained bloodhounds is scouring the mountains and valleys near the city In search of George Parry and John Hunt the two escaped convicts who ar ° supposed sup-posed to be in hiding in some lonely spot among the foothills All Tuesday night and yesterday and far into last night mounted guards continued the search among the mountains while guards afoot searched the lowlands The hoarse bay of the hounds as they lost and found the trail in the desperate manhunt could occasionally be heard from the city Until early this morning the search was continued but aside from slIght evidences found by the hounds no I trace of the escaped convicts has been I discovered by the posse The search will not likely terminate nor cease In vigilance until the men are run to earth EXHAUSTED HOUNDS Immediately after the escape was learned late Tuesday afternoon mounted mount-ed guards were sent In pursuit Falling Fall-ing to find the tracks of the men they returned and the three trained bloodhounds blood-hounds were freod from their leashes and put upon the path the men were supposed to have travsrnert In crawling through the willows toward the mouth of Parleys canyon The dogs soon caught the scent and announced an-nounced the fact by deep bays which resounded through the hills The animals i swiftly followed the trail to the banlcs of the stream and then ran hurriedly to and fro along the banks Vainly they searched for the lost trail which has not yet been re found Far Into the night the animals searched for the sign which they had lost l but without avail The men had evidently taken to the bed of the stream and waded far enough to completely com-pletely obliterate all evidences of their flight both to the guards and to the hounds The dogs ere restless and Impatient however and ran frantically back and forth along the banks of the stream in a vain attempt to solve the mystery of their defeat About midnight mid-night they were completely exhausted and the guardsi were compelled to return re-turn them to the prison The guards in the saddles continued the search until un-til daylight yesterday morning SEARCH RESUMED At daybreak yesterday Guards W D Davis and David Hilton with Guard Ure and John Stowe clerk at tho prl son resumed the hunt They were mounted and armed Only one of the hounds the best trained and most experienced ex-perienced was taken from the kennels the other to belns still exhausted from the wild chase of the night before Other I guards were sent out on foot to scour the surrounding foothills and the brush along the east bench The riders rid-ers went farther back into the mountains moun-tains with the dog where the trail was lost the night before HORSEMEN STILL OUT The men on foot returned to the penitentiary peni-tentiary late yesterday afternoon after a fruitless search among the foothills and that part of the posse abandoned the search until further orders are given The men on horseback however how-ever remained among the mountains the entire day and have not returned to the prison People living near Murray Mur-ray declare that they heard the baying of the hound and saw the armed men searching In the southern part of the valley They have not reported to the warden and no one at the Institution knows with what success they have met since their departure early yesterday yester-day morning MUCH GROUND COVERED I I In the search the posse has partially encircled the city and the baying of the dog could be heard by people living In the outskirts It is believed that the men have hidden themselves near the city and are In secure temporary quarters quar-ters In the foothills The fact that the dogs are tlll unable to pick up the trail leads the officers at the penitentiary to believe that the men either secured horses and made good their escape or else jumped Into a wagon and were driven away by Homeone Ignorant of the crime he was coml11lttl i 1 gIn g-In the search yesterday the mounted guards covered a distance of many miles They traversed a part of Parleys Par-leys canyon went far down the Little Cottonwood and retracing their tracks returned toward the city and made a partial circuit of the southern part The solitary hound continues In his attempt to find the lost trail but Is as much at sea as his masters NOT CONSIDERED DESPERATE Before their departure the two i trusties went to the barn and se rretcd two bridles It la believed that the bridles were hidden for the purpose of leading the guards to believe that they had stolen horses and that a chase by the logs would be useless The bridles 1 1 which at first were thought to have been stolen were found yester day It IB believed that neither of the men is armed and it is also stated that it is doubtful if i cither would offer desperate des-perate resistance If captured By the guards they arc not considered dcsper ate men and the crimes for which they were sentenced do not Indicate they arc characters who would fiercely resist arrest when they are captured The search will be vigorously prosecuted prose-cuted by the authorities until the men are overtaken In their flight Photographs Photo-graphs and descriptions have been sent Into every city and hamlet In the State and Into other States offering at the same time a reward of 500 each for the capture of the two menThe men-The search will be continued until the men are caught said T C Wright deputy warden at the prison last night We have already offered a reward and have posses scouring the mountains and foothills We believe that since the dous are Unable to find the trail the men must have stolen horses and ridden rid-den away or must have climbed Into some farmers wagon They will be captured however for we will not relinquish re-linquish our efforts until they are |
