Show CONVICT IS SHOT I IN HIS CELL BY THE NIGHT TURNKEY I i Tragedy Occurs in the Wy oming State Prison It JAMES WILLIAMS KILLER > > Caught tha Guard and Attempted I I I I i I tempted to Take Keys I 11 f II I I t I Grabs Gun Which Was Drawn b > IT I Officer and in the Scufflo Which I Follows Was Shot f I 1 I I TRIBUNE SPECIAL III I Rawlins Aug 18 James Williams prisoner In the State penitentiary here a was shot In the head last night by the f I night turnkey E B Godson and died few f n few hours after from the wound Williams I Wil-liams Is the prisoner who escaped I I from the Institution June Cth and was caught n few days after by Deputy I Sheriff Dodge near DIxon Since that time he has given the penitentiary officials offi-cials all kinds of trouble 1 HAD HALLUCINATIONS Williams pretended to have hallucinations halluci-nations and at his request was taken from the cellhousc to the womens ward a few days ago because he said the other men were talking about and abusing abus-ing him The womens ward Is on the second floor and he was all alone TAMPERED WITH LOCK Yesterday evening he was noisy swearing and making all the noise possible pos-sible The guard went to his cell at lllf and saw that he had been tamperIng tamper-Ing with the lock He has several time made keys to let himself out but has been caught each time PRISONER GRABS GUARD When the guard stopped to the cell door to examine the lock l Williams j grabbed him by l the waist band of hl < Jj I trousers Goodson put his hands aguinnt the door to brace himself and break the prisoners hold l when he caught the guard by the left hand and pulled It inside In-side bonding It around the bars Wil I liams then reached out with his other hand und caught the guards keys TUSSEL OVER A GUN The guard pulled his gun thinking to scare the fellow into letting loose but i Instead the prisoner grubbed the gun with both hands They tusseled over It for several minutes when the guard saw that he was going to have to let i loose HAD TO LET LOOSE He thought he would fire the gun so that If the prisoner did get It he would have no ammunition Williams was dodging back and forth to keep out of fl the way If the guard I should fire and pulled the guards hand up so tightly against the bars thit It caused him much pain With the keys already In his possession after getting the gun the prisoner would easily have made his way out BULLET ENTERS FOREHEAD Goodson thought If he could fire all the loads out of the gun It would then be an even hand I to hand fight If tlu fellow came Into the corridor and h wan willing to take chances He did not want to shoot the convict but the I first time he pulled the trigger Williams tell back upon his bunk The bullet struck him squarely In the forehead between I be-tween the eyebrows ire < lied at 245 oclock this morning WAS A DESPERATE MAN Williams would have completed his lime the 9th of this month had he not tried to escape and he was now scrv tl lag hlR good behavior time He was a I I desperate man mean disposition arid lately has been very troublcomi pretending to be Insane but evidentv waiting for just such a chance He was I if doing five years for robbery He has i tried tograb the guard In this manner i before and Friday night took the straw I from his pillow and set It on fire evl I dcntly determined to get out or die In t the attempt k TURNKEY EXONERATED Good on has boon employed here since I March 12th The coroners Jury completely com-pletely exonerated him from all blame I jt I considering that he was In danger of J losing his own life J |
