Show DROPS THE TAX FIGHT Board of Education Bows to the Courts Decree CHANGE MADE FOR DOXEY Lafayette the Name Given the New School I At the Regular Meeting of the Board n Mass of Business Was Transacted Nothing will be done by the City Board of Education in regard to appealing ap-pealing from the decision of District Judge Lewis in the mandamus proceedings proceed-ings brought by the bOll against the county ofllcials charged with the assessment as-sessment and levying of taxes Judge Lewis denied the writ asked for on the ground that the statement made by the board before the 1st of May askeu lor the amount of money provided for by the levy made and that the second statement was oL no effect President Guiaque reported the decision of the court to the board and the matter was disposed of by referring the report to the Committee on School Laws upon the motion of Mr Geoghegan MANY TEACHERS QUIT The board accepted the resignation of thirtyseven teachers who taught last year Applications from twentyeight teachers asking for positions in the Salt Lake schools were referred to the Committee Com-mittee on Teachers and School Work The above applications are from teachers teach-ers In ten different States The names of those who have withdrawn from the schools are as follows Margaret C Hull May Kimball lena McMight Margaret F Greer Lavina Van Pott Sara Morgan Carolyn Williams dell Bishop Katherine Johnson Daisy Ray bould Emma Lewis I Emily Davis Vera Tempest Howena Oltlnger Rosalie Cope Edna D Davis D L McDonald Alice Stlmmel Emma M Wright Mary McFadden Cia missa Ellerbeck Clare Cummings Clara Larsen A J Nellson Elizabeth Fitzgerald Georfjja Wheeler Ernest E IT Scott AgaTiia Morris Harriett Randolph Kate Real Annie Jones Mrs Emma Glover Mrs T W Bliss Ella JamcH Jennie Simons Ira F Schaffner and Barbara Kinnersley FIXED THINGS FOR DOXEY Upon the motion oC Mr Newman a few changes in the assignment of principals prin-cipals as agreed upon at the previous meeting were made in order that Samuel Sam-uel Doxey may be better able to supervise super-vise the work in manual training of which he Is the director I was urged that if he were made the principal of a smaller school he could devote more time to the training work and for this reason it was decided to take him from the Union school and give him the prln clpalnhip of the Fremont W S Wallace Wal-lace who had been assigned to the Jackson school was then given tho Union building of which he was principal prin-cipal last year unTl D A Nelson who had been assigned to the Fremont will have the Jackson school this year JANITORS ARE NAMED In accordance with the report of the Committee on School Buildings and Giounds the following appointments of janitors were made William Lcatham Fremont school at a salary of 65 per month and T F W Ehlers high fchool at SS2 per month beginning August Au-gust Sth I was agreed on recommendation recom-mendation of the same committee that the school budding in the Ninth ward bo rented from the Ward Ecclesiastical association at r monthly rental of 525 The appointments a made by Super < intendent Christensen to the free normal nor-mal scholarships In the State normal school were approved The eight pupils who will represent this city in the normal nor-mal department of the University ore Irma Dunham 137 Hazel court Nellie Lambert S Orchard square Ruby Thorstrom 751 South Third East street Inez Thomas 333 Edith avenue Phyllis Clayton G7S West Third North street Vera Oswald iin3 South Seventh East street Luella Waring i73 Fifth East street and Myrtle CracroCt 737 East Fourth South street NAME FOR NEW SCHOOL The special committee composed of Mr Young and Mr Geoghegan appointed ap-pointed to select a name for the new school building In the Eighteenth ward reported that they had decided upon the name of Lafayette Some of the members objected to the name preferring prefer-ring to have the school named after some local celebrity The report oC the committee however was adopted when put to a vote A petition received from the residents resi-dents over the Jordan river in the vicinity vi-cinity of White lake asking for a conveyance con-veyance In which to take their chi rent ren-t and from school In the winter time was referred to the Committee on Teachers and School Work The petitioners toners complain of the mud and Impassable Im-passable condition of the roads during the winter months stating that they hive seventeen pupils living in the vicinity vi-cinity of Eighth South and Fourth West streets and that the nearest school the Poplar Grove is a mile and a half distant A special meeting of the board will be called within the next clay or two for the purpose of assigning the teachers teach-ers to the various schools for the coming com-ing year |
