Festivities I I p Correspondence Tribune Carson City Nov March 9 1902 Yesterday at Reno was the first field day of th political campaign for the Democratic and Silver party In fact they may consistently I be considered and written of as one and the same so harmoniously har-moniously and completely have they fused They would not fuse at the last election but there wan very little kickIng kick-Ing or refusal to fuse this time Common Com-mon interest in the election of Francis G Newlands a United States Senator from Nevada Is whats the matter I was tho first meeting of the State central cen-tral committee of each party for the campaign and each met separately and organized into proper shape filling all vacancies and adding new members The attendance was good all parts of the State being well represented members mem-bers being present from Elko Lander Esmeralda White Pine and Nyc counties coun-ties Cheering news and letters were received ¬ re-ceived from all sides and both committees I commit-tees soon found themselves ready for business The Newlands contingent was in full force Mutual committees on conference were chosen who proceeded to confer together in an amicable spirit settling all bickerings in short order One party wanted the State convention loh held at Winnemucca and the other at Carson Car-son but that idea was ruled down r extremely Injudicious showing a split as it were which the Republicans would not be slow to take advantage of By mutual agreement the time for Jointly holding the State convention for nomination of State officers etc was set for April 2Cth and Reno was settled upon as the place for the convention After passing a severelyworded resolution resolu-tion totally condemning the inherent perfidy of Senators Stewart and Jones in going back upon themselves and tho party and rejoining the Republicans I and setting the time for holding primaries pri-maries for tire State convention and the I transaction of other routine business I the committees finally adjourned subject I sub-ject to call of their respective chairmen The present State officers are all candidates can-didates for reeloctlon In Knmf form nr other of course mostly depending on Newlands to pull them through but there are or will be too many candidates In the field on their own side to say nothing of the other for them all to win therefore It is somewhat of an Interesting In-teresting point who will get left out in t the cold Moreover it has to be considered consid-ered that the Republican party Is very much stronger than It has been or was I a the last election when United States Senator Stewart Silver party candidate was reelected by only ono vote and I that a purchased Republican Gov Sad ler Silver party candidate woif ele ted I by Just 22 majority and even NeVlafids ran behind his ticket for Congressman On the Republican side for United I States Senator are mentioned Hon A C Cleveland of White Pino and Hon J P Jones the present incumbent and I one or two dark yet potent horses are strongly hinted at who will come Into public prominence shortly Andsuch Is the present political condition of wild I and woolly Nevada wid THE COMSTOCK < FITCTTERED DRILL f The big fourinch drill which rrs hC4 ing put down through the east Avail or Brunswick section to probe the sub I merged lower levels of the Comstock lode l over 3000 feet below the surface and show what good ore could be found at that depth remains stuck fast or fltcheied aa Cousin Jack terms It In llchercd Us i hole at a depth of 170 feet Cant doa do-a thing with i and the question Is whether to keep on trying to rescue it or drill a new hole I Is proposed to run a casing down the hole and get It out that way which is quite a Job 01 itself even If I feasible The fact Is that the hole should have been cased In the first place preventing loose seams of rock or gravel l from interfering I Is easy boring In solid porphyry without any casing but that cannot be depended depend-ed upon especially in a distance of 3000 feet The project was Inaugurated by Zadlg and other prominent Comstock operators and looks like a dead failure thus far But this is the first time the attempt has been nmd6 to drill so far and deep and In such kind of ground RAILROAD MATTERS The next hearing of the case of the San Pedro and Short Line Railroad companies In the United States court Carson for right of way through a portion por-tion of Lincoln county is set to come upon up-on Friday the llth Instant Preparations Prepara-tions arc said to be making to extend the Nevada Central railroad 112 miles farther southward from Austin Junction to Tonopah I will be a narrow gauge of course like the rest of the rood but will be l good Improvement on present methods of getting freight and ore into or out of Tonopah A more direct route would be from SodavlHc or Candelaria sixty miles but no substantial move appears ap-pears to bo making In that direction In view o the old and almost dally Wand W-and rich developments being made in needed the Tonopah f section a railroad is sadly MINING ITEMS The Wcdeklnd mine near Reno is pro grossing all right and providing lots IQ good paying ore the new mill will be completed shortly and commence thc reduction of the ore on an extensive and productive scale The mines of Ollnghouse canyon near Wndsworth are also giving better returns than bclcr returs ever and the recent storms y > vc furnished a good supply of water for placer mining purposes at that point The new Vulcan Vul-can smelter for the mines up around the head of Carson valley will soon be on hand and In process 6f erection when new and rich developments and produc lon are looked for In that direction THE HEAD OF NAVIGATION The Nevada Stale Reduction work or I designated as the head of navi gation on Carson river the scene of lh6 Pete Hopkins murder and other queer peculiarities Empire still holds Its own In the way of local sensations Not lohg ago they
