Show RACE RiOT OCCURS IN WLMIIN6TON Wilmington Del June 5A riot broke out on the streets here late tonight I to-night between whites and negroes which for a time assumed serious proportions The arrival of a squad of pollee how ever quickly dispersed the participants I Two arrests were made Alarge gang of negroes numbering probably 200 who had been marching I up and down Ninth street were chal i longed by about twentylive white men and In the battle that followed over a hundred shots were exchanged A squad of police under Captain A Evans and Sergeant McDermott rushed I I to the scene and charged upon tho mob I The negroes and whites scattered and fled In all directions but tho police succeeded suc-ceeded In capturing two negroes Lean der Moore and Joseph Shockley I I The police used their clubs freely and In the melee attcndnnt upon the arrests I Sergeant McDermott and Patrolman I Green received slight wounds One negro I i ne-gro James Mercer was shot In the hend I during the riot but his wound Is not I believed to he serious In a brawl In another part of the city I I William Cramer a negro was shot In 9 the stomach by a white man He was taken to a hospital In a serious condition condi-tion The leaders of the party of negroes which was marching on Ninth street tonight to-night declared that they Intended to resent re-sent the attacks made upon members of their race last night They fay they have been badly abused and that they do not Intend to quietly submit to such abuse They say they have no sympathy sympa-thy for While the negro who was lynched but that on tim contrary most of their race In and about Wilmington approve of his lynching |
