Is not only picturesque but It Is one of great Intrcst which thousands will follow the coming season sea-son onMr R E Lockwoocl tho editor of the Welcer Signal In describing the Thunder Thun-der Mountain country In the Cleveland Plain Dealer says There Is every indication that In I the great Thunder mountain district r J new Thunder moun lain discovery where ore running as high as 3000 per ton was found late last fall All mining men familiar with Idaho are unanimous In declaring that it is destined become the greatest producer pro-ducer of precious metals In the United States It is pushing all olhcift hard as It Is and while California Colorado Colora-do Montana Utah and Nevada have had the benefit of thorough and scientific scien-tific development Idaho has been neglected neg-lected and has been handicapped in the race through lack of thorough prospecting Sst attention of I pecting and the cazIst capitalists and goldsetkers but these conditions are at last broken and the fame of recent discoveries In the Saw Tooth range has spread to such an extent ex-tent that next season will see from 10000 to 30000 miners flocking Into a portion of the State which practically offers a virgin field with almost absolute ab-solute certainty that a larger proportion propor-tion will find fortune or at least sat Msfactory returns than Have succeeded In any of the stampedes oC late years This field Is found In the VAST MOUNTAIN REGION of central Idaho the romantic region of the Saw Tooth range and Salmon river spurs The foaming waters of the gorgeously canyoned Salmon river and tributaries cuts through tho heart of this wonderful domain and as proof of the treasure hidden away In Its mountain recesses the sand and gravel bars of the Salmon river clear to Its junction with the Snake are Impregnated with golden treasure which the abrasion of ages has gathered gath-ered from the hidden veins and deposited de-posited in tim bed of the river Along this river a great placer mining industry in-dustry has sprung up The area of this but partially explored realm Is something like 700 square miles and around Its skirts Boise basin Rocky Bar Atlanta and Wood river on the south Salmon river and Glbbonsville on the east Florence and Warrens on the northwest over 500000000 have been extracted and while It may seem strange that the great heart of the country has not been long since exploited ex-ploited In qeorch of the central zone from which these minor deposIt have radiated Jt Is easily explained when we consider the many excitements which have swept the tide of miners from one place to another along routes which frequent travel made more congenial con-genial and safe from the treachery of the skulking Indian and so It Was that until very recently this section was penetnted only by the daring hunter and trapper who paid little attention to mineral wealth while on the watch for his proverbial red foe But now that the Indian has domesticated and has settled don to peaceful life on his reservation this enticing region I is as safe from such dangers as a city park and the recent explorations made have demonstrated the existence of great wealth awaiting the keen l re searth of man to unearth The coming year will see the INVADING ARMY OF TUNERSt 1 bivouacked on strcanuand trail 1 I c Ing from one side to the other of this promised land at will and the predictions predic-tions are that the next twelve months will electrify the country with a series of discoveries that will give It first place in the eyes of the mining world It Is an and mountain and rainbow trout of most delicious flavor To the sportsman it Is an entrancing entranc-ing country of wild forests crystal streams waterfalls lakes and hot springs and affords an opportunity to hundreds of hunting pprtles who annually an-nually seek the mountains for pleas ure to enjoy a delightful season and by employing one or two prospectors fcvmlllai with minerals bag fortune simultaneously with bagging a native bull elk The country is already familiar with the discovery of thegreat deposits at Buffalo Hump where the owners of the ohlet jpropcrt3es ro rated aa nill i llonalres The Buffalo Hump lies on the north side of the great chasm Qf the Salmon river and is only a suggestion sugges-tion ofthe country lying Gixty to seventy seven-ty miles to southward on the opposite op-posite side of the Salmon While of late yearn very rich strikes of PLACER AND QUARTZ GOLD awe becn made between Warren and Thunder mountain whetting the appetite ap-petite of the adventurer preparatory to the great rush at which the country Is now on the eve three brothers named Caswell were the first to penetrate pene-trate Into and discover gold In the Thunder Mountain district proper These bold trappers hunters and miners mi-ners pitched their tent in the summer of 1897 upon the side of Thunder mountain this particular peak being so named because of the fact that frequently fre-quently when the weather 1s calmn and cloudless a lois rumbling sound Issues from Jle bowels of the mountain and can be henrd for mllea Tho peak Is an extinctivolcano and is suppose to Lc hollow and to the falling of crumbling crum-bling masses of earth in this cavity Is attributed the sounds heard The Casells began prospecting and soon panned out gold In encouraging quantities They immediately manufactured manufac-tured a rude rocker and In five days took out 250 in diibt They Kept their knowledge to themseU and the next season went back and began locating mining claims A cqnvas hose had I been brought in and when they had constructed con-structed ditches and sluices they had time to make a short run wHh the pipe the result was a cleanup of 1750 In 1S9D they took out 4500 by the same moans They did not put In all their time placer mining however as they discovered that a gicat hog back of peculiar pe-culiar formation Immediately under which the placers were located which stood 15Q feet high and 700 feet long was simply the big gold mine which by slacking and abrasion had produced the placers They covered this with locations loca-tions and commenced tunnels The next year 1900 between driving tunnel and other Improvements they found time to lake out 18000 from the placer ground During the present year Col W H Dewey a gentleman who had made several sev-eral million dollars In Idaho mines became be-came Interested in the new discoveries and negotiated with the Caswclls for the purchase of the property and in November Novem-ber the mine was turned over to Mr Dewey who paid the discoverers 100 000 cash Dewey had taken the bond on the claim early In the spring and all the season work has been going on under his direction In the course of these operations ore running 3000 per ton has been disclosed The Casvells were > permitted to work the pincers this year and toolc out 10000 As a demonstration demonstra-tion of the magnitude of this one property prop-erty may be cited the report of Mr Martin Curran well known in the West as a sound and able mining expert r k cSIjN I I J 1i I ll I r jiI iii I j 11 f oft I r I LcLrj I fp t f In Cnswells Cabin j I whom Mr Dewey sent to make a thorough F thor-ough examination Upon his report Mr Dovey paid over the money for the mine In the meantime mean-time 810 stamp mll1 had been sent into the camp and uable discoveries close by which they will now turn their attention to That the GREAT GOLD FIELDS Imnedlately surrounding Thunder mountain are very extensive la shown fiom the fact that 10 cents to 2 per pan has been obtained from placer beds In the vicinity while many sections sec-tions of the surrounding mountains and streams have not as yet echoed to the footsteps of man and may contain con-tain untold treasure About 200 men are wintering In the vicinity to be on the ground In the early < < spring Strikes made at various places between Thunder Thun-der mountain and Warrens are indicative Indica-tive of the Immensity and value of the Meld On Big creek great copper and gold ledges have been found Smith creek strikes have shown fabulous ore On Secesh creek two brothers Andrew An-drew and Eric Larsen took out W < jp this year in two months from placer deposits On Grouse creoJ Bohndlo and Broughm two old minors rl anfd up 7000 with a canvas hose Miners on Schlsler creek have all received big returns At Marshall lake a party of twenty or thirty men found fine free gold ledges cutting the mountains on each side of the creek These can IH worked by tunnels and without machinery ma-chinery or expensive methods About twenty men are wintering thro and at least 200 Idaho miners are pro paring to go to this point about fifty miles from Thunder mountain In thi spring
