Show Will CONSIDER TREATY Senate May Ratify One With Denmark Today IS NO MARKED OPPOSITION Probabilities Aro That a Vote On tho Philippine Tariff Bill Will Be Beached During Latter Part of tho WeekAn Unusually Active Week Is Promised in the HouseWar Revenue Bill Will Bo Taken Up Passage of the Measure Is a Foregone Fore-gone Conclusion Washington Feb lBTho greater part of the day on Monday will be devoted de-voted by the Senate to an effort to ratify rat-ify the treat with Denmark for the cession of the Danish West Indies This proceeding will be In executive session and there Is no certainty as to whether one day will be sufficient for tho purpose or not Thug far there has been no marked evidence of opposition oppo-sition to the treaty but Senator Bacon has Indicated a purpose of offering an amendment to the agreement and of discussing ILto ysome extent What further discussion may develop remains re-mains to be seen If tlc consideration of the treaty Is not concluded on Monday Mon-day Its final disposition prpbably will bo postponed several days as Senator Lodge has agreed to sidetrack tho Philippine bill for only one day PHILIPPINE TARIFF BILL With reference to the Philippine bill It Is altogether probable tHat a vote will be reached during the latter part of the week The Democrats have been In conference and have reached the conclusion that they will be able to conclude their presentation of their opposition to the bill In a few more speeches An agreement fixing a time to vote Is likely to be reached on Tuesday Tues-day and the Indications now arc that next Friday or next Saturday will be named as the day for deciding tho fate of the bill There are still a few set speeches to be delivered on the bill but most of the speeches toward the close of the debate will be brief By unanimous consent the census bill will I be disposed of after tho Danish Dan-ish treaty and before the debate on the Philippine bill Is taken It Is expected that a vote will be reached on the census cen-sus bill after very little more debate FORECAST OF HOUSE The coming week promises to bo one of unusual activity In the House of Representatives Beginning tomorrow the war revenue reduction bill will betaken be-taken up with two days for debate and a stringent special rule bringing tho bill to a vote at 3 p m on Tues day without Intervening motion to recommit re-commit or amendments other than those of a verbal character proposed by the committee At the outset there promises to be a spirited contest on the adoption of the special rule as tho minority mi-nority will protest against the cutting off of amendments and the motion to recommit There Is little doubt however how-ever that the rule will bo adopted When the debate proper begins there will be hardly more than three hours on each side This time will be given to the members of the Ways and Means committee who In turn will apportion It among their colleagues The passage of the bill Is a foregone conclusion as the minority members as well as tho majority favor It the only difference being as to the amount of reduction and the extent to which the tariff changes should go WHEELERS SPEECH Aside from the tariff Issue It would bs no surprise If the sensational speech of Representative Wheeler of Kentucky Ken-tucky on Prince Henrys visit and other foreign matters figures In the discussion as much fooling has been aroused by the speech The Indian appropriation bill will betaken be-taken up on Wednesday with two other appropriation bills the diplomatic diplo-matic and consular and the postofflce I In reserve Chairman Sherman of the Indian Affairs committee expects to occupy two or three days so that the I other appropriation bills probably will go over until the following week In I that case private claims will get some consideration the latter part of the weekIMPORTANT IMPORTANT LEGISLATION There are several Important measures meas-ures of general legislation now ready for consideration Including the anti anarchy bill and the Pacific cable bill The Intention however Is not to consider con-sider these general measures so long as any appropriation bills remain un acted upon I Besides the worlc on the floor of the House It Is expected that the coming I week may see some progress In the Ways and Means committee on the subject of Cuban reciprocity which was deferred until after the war revenue rev-enue reduction measure had been u I passed |
