Show DEBSS WRONG IDEA lIr Eugene F Debs urging that work Ingmen must become socialists holds that the pollttlcal I parties which exist are but wings to the capitalistic Kite and that capital gives one or the other power to suit Its own purposes Bethinks Be-thinks that the boasted prosperity of the country is about at an end and that capital will put In a Democratic President Presi-dent next time as a scapegoat But Hint wont do the theory is not consistent con-sistent For if the purlics are equally the tools of capital there is no reason why capital should demean the one and exalt the other no reason why the Democratic party should be made the scapegoat for Republican sins On the contrary capital should prefer the Democratic party which can make the loudest and must fervent protestations of any for the good ot the downtrodden people at the very time that It Is betraying be-traying them in the rankest manner as in its advocacy of free trade which would reduce laborers wages to the European Eu-ropean standard or deprive mechanics of work altogether as was so nearly accomplished ac-complished in the last Democratic administration ad-ministration which the country has had And no administration the American I people has ever put In powei was so thoroughly subservient to capitalistic Influence and so sturdily ready to do its bidding as was that same Cleveland administration ad-ministration In its handling of the public pub-lic finances and the Issue of bonds the first lot under a secret arrangement which gave the Morgan syndicate a rnkcofC that was most gratifying to that greedy crowd and correspondingly l oppressive upon and disastrous to the people There must be something wrong with Mr Debss logic Either the parties do not occupy the relation to capital which he claims or else the Democratic party Is the favored party of the capitalists and the capitalists should and naturally would keep It In power If they could But the fact that capital has not done this proves either that capital does not work through HH best and most subservient sub-servient agency which is a contradiction contradic-tion of all probability and experience or else that capital cannot and does not control the elections But In any way one can look at the problem It Is manifest mani-fest that Sir Debss solution of it Is wrong and that capital plays a far less Important part than he would assign tot to-t and that the people play the really mportant part And this latter Is the undoubted fact |
