Show BACK FROM PHILIPPINES CAPT AND MRS B R WELLS ARRIVE IN SALT LAKE Interesting Comment by Capt Wells on the Present Conditions in the Islands I After an absence of almost three years In the Philippines CapL and Mrs Brlant IL Wells last night returned to I this city and are guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Thomas Jennings They arrived on the delayed Southern Pacific train which reached Ogden at 7 oclock Capt Wells was met at the station by his brother Coy Wells and the party was Immediately l driven to the homo of Mr and Mrs Jennings Speaking of his stay In the Philippines Philip-pines CapL Well sald he stayed there simply because he was under orders that while In many respects the climate of the Islands Is superior to that of Utah still he prefers the laiter as a place In which to cast his lot The I i island of Panay he says Is u healthful place particularly for children as none l of the diseases common to children prevail pre-vail there I Yes said Capt Wells there Is still a little fighting In Luzon and S mnr but ills I mostly guerrilla warfare and that will soon bo over The Filipinos I Fili-pinos of course are not capable of selfgovernment t and will not be for I some time to come but If the Government Govern-ment sends only able men there who I I will administer affairs with absolute justice I think there will be no more I trouble The Philippines will be a good place for young Americans of pluck and ability abili-ty to go but I would advise them to wale until Congress grants them a few more privileges At present you know I they are neither allowed to take up land I nor mIning claims I ICapt j Wells was familiar with the charge against Harold Pitt only from I what he had read in the papers but from his personal acquaintance said I You may say for me that I know Harold Pitt well and am satisfied that he had no Intention of defrauding the I I Government or making any money out of the Government He is well liked there and has filled many Important and large contracts for the Government On July lfthCant and Mrs Wells I left Manila on the Sumner just five days before the departure of the Sheridan Sheri-dan which was to bring Gen MacAr I thur and his staff to this country Capt Wells went to the Philippines as First lieutenant of the Eighteenth infantry and when his company was ordered home was promoted to a Captaincy of the Twentyeighth Infaritry stationed at Fort Sheridan III He has a two months leave of absence most of which I time will be spent In this city after which he will leave for his new post of I duty I Both Capt and Mrs Wells have a host of friends In 1 Salt n Lake Cit who will welcome them home after their I extended absence |
