Show MISSIONARY MEETING I Addresses on Work of the Presbyterian Presby-terian Church The First Presbyterian church was well HUed last evening on the occasion of the missionary exercises conducted by the Womens Synodlcal society Mrs R G McNIcce presiding Miss Frost us the first speaker referred to her twelve years of labor among the Indians on the Fort Hal reservation before seeing tangible evidences of her I sacrifices The result was that eighteen I eight-een months ago a church was organ I Izcd there among the Indians with eighteen members which has since increased in-creased to sixtyseven members and a n church edifice will be completed In November The work is now in a promising condition and the Indians are I helng Induced to adopt Christian marriage The prayers of Christian people were asked for the furtherance of the work Rev Dr McAfee gave an engaging address on the work of the Presbyterian Presbyte-rian church In Alaska and showed thnt In the Interior of the Territory a comB tion of savagery existed which called for the strongest efforts of tho church to counteract The church has eleven missions In Alaska and the converted natives are Industrious and thrifty At Juneau shipmasters who had cursed the missionaries gave preference In employment to Christian natives because be-cause they could be r < lcd on There is a Presbyterian mission at Point Barrow Bar-row the most northern mission In all the world Tho speaker then portrayed tho wretched spiritual conditions ob taming in Nov Mexico but which are missionaries being alleviated by the Presbyterian The evening closed with n most en tertaining recital by Rev Dr Thomas o Marshall of Chicago of how Marcus whitman saved Oregon and the North west for the United States and he then said that as at that time Oregon was considered as a foreign country and Whitman was a Christian missionary he would use the incident as an illus i tration of tho value of foreign a misclons The address was warmly applauded A pleasant feature of the evening was vocal duo between Mrs Andrews and I given Mr Gilbert which was excellently |
