Show I MAYGO TOiCHINA I Assistant Secretary Hill Gives Status I of Missionaries In China New York Oct 3L Rev Arthur J Brown one or the secretaries of the Presbyterian board of foreign missions today received a letter from David J Hill Assistant Secretary > of State which covers various points connected with the present status of the missionaries mission-aries In China The letter was written In connection with Information that Rev A M Cunningham and his wife missionaries at Peking were about to return to their post and requesting that the United States authorities In China be Informed of their purpose If in the judgment the department those authorities au-thorities might interpose any objec C lon to their return to the city The conditions governing access of I foreigners to the nontreaty towns of the Interior Including Peking and their security there Mr Hill writes will be considered In the negotiations for a definite settlement between China and the powers While would be premature prema-ture to open an access to the Chinese interior for our citizens engaged In commercial com-mercial or professional pursuits there Awould seem to be no objection to Mr JCunnlnghams return The United States forces at Tien Tsln and Peking would doubtless afford him all facili ties for his return not In conflict ulth regulations which may have been adopted regarding tho return of foreigners for-eigners Into the city A copy of this correspondence will be sent to Minister Conger for his information Cunningham who was in this country coun-try on furlough at the time of the outbreak out-break in China recently applied for permission to return to his post He Is now In San Francisco and with his wife will nail for China on Saturday |
