| Show j fi INSANE ASYLUM BURNS j < t L 1 d Nebraska Institution at Norfolk COt Completely 5 Destroyed by Fire and Three of Inmates N t7 In-mates Are Cremated f I J 1 AJ There Were Six Hundred Inmates in the Main Building Where Flames Broke Out and the Efforlsto Jo Rescue Them Were f Difficult in the ExtrerneAU Were Finally Gotten Out but I Three Nine Buildings Were DestroyedLoss 250000 I Norfolk Neb Sept 23The asylum for the Insane In this city was completely com-pletely destroyed by fire today It Is believed that three of the Inmates were burned to death The I fire orlgl I rutted from some unknown cause In the Vest wing of the Institution this morning The loss on buildings and their contents will reach 5250000 I SIX HUNDRED LIVES IN PERIL Owing to the early hour and the un preparedness of the fire department I but little could be done In the effort to save tho Institution Before the firemen reached the site It was found that the main building was doomed There were COO Inmates in this structure struc-ture and the efforts to rescue them were difficult in the extreme FOUGHT THEIR RESCUERS Shrieks and yells of some of them filled the air and many fought against lfiJletl attempts of the rescuers Others were completely cowed and attendants I had the burning no difficulty bUilding In leading them out of The citizens of I I Norfolk did every thing possible to assist the authorities They acted ns sualds for the Insane patients There were eleven buildings in all on time grounds ant but three of thcm were saved ONE BODY RECOVERED The body of Victor Casper a patient w found this afternoon in the ruins burned to deth Peter Ober and John McGovern m are missing and Jesperson and Kyser are severely l burned All are patients ALL RECcORDS SAVED I All the books valuable papers and the asylum records were saved Nearly all the patients were taken from the burning structure In their night clothes and suffered more or less frOm the cold About 250 were taken to Lincoln and placed in the asylum at that place The remainder of the pa tients will be housed In the buildings L that are still In condition for use |
