Show OGDEN CANYON LANDSLIDE A BIG BOULDER LOOSENED S STARTS THE SLIDE I Bridge Over Ogdcn River Swept S AwayRoad Filled County Loses S6000 Company Loses S1000 Ogdcn Jan 14A big landslide came down the mountain at the mouth of Ogdcn canyon this morning carrying away the bridge over Ogden river and damaging tho retaining wall of the Utah Light ana lower company Weber We-ber county IK the loser by nearly 60l0 while the damage to thopower company com-pany will be in the neighborhood ot 1090 S The slide came down the north side of the canyon and was preceded by a huge boulder loosened by the recent thaw or the overflow from tho pipeline pipe-line This giant stone carried away a portion of the retaining wall of the pipeline and fell squarely on the bridge which spans Ogden river at this point crushing It Into the river Tons of stone and dirt followed in tile wake of the boulder sweeping everything in Its path A telephone message was sent from Huntsville to the Sheriff and to the office of the power company and Immediate steps were taken to repair the damage General Manager Camp bell of the power company happened to be In Ogdcn In attendance on the Bannister funeral and in company with Local Manager Wade went to the scene TIlE CAUSE Engineer Hayward of the power company com-pany was seen last night after a visit to the scene of the slide and says the damage suffered by 1 the power company com-pany was not as extensive as at llrL reported the retaining wall not being materially damaged It developed that the trouble was caused by a break In the overlow pipe running upward from the main pipe The overflow pipe runs upward through the rock but the seepage la dislodged and preclpltaled down the mountain The water rushing out of the pipe undermined the bridge and precipitated It inlo the river It is said the county will immediately investigate investi-gate the matter as to the liability of the por cnmnany for the destruction of the bridge Commissioner Wilson will begin work < Monday morning for tho erection of a temporary bridge across the river and traffic will not be delayed more than one day At present the road Is absolutely abso-lutely Impassable The service of the power plant was not impaired Witnesses Wit-nesses of the overflow say that the sight of the volume of water tumbling from the peak of the mountain was ono of surpassing beauty |
