Show PRESS WANTS RELIEF Newspaper Publishers Association Memorializes Congress 1 Washington i May Representatives 1 of the American Publishers association I presented a memorial to the Senate Finance committee formally asking that some relief be afforded on account of the higher price of paper Tho delegation dele-gation said the association represented 22000 papers No particular legislation I was advocated The delegation was received by Senator Sen-ator Allison acting chairman in the absence of Senator Aldrich The resolution reso-lution recited that the price of printing paper used by newspapers has increased in-creased from GO to 100 per cent without reason or warrant to be found In the conditions of the industry which was believed to be the working of a trust The association appealed to Congress I to inquire into conditions complained I of to the end that suitable legislation might be provided to remedy these conditions con-ditions As newspapers are sold at a fixed price the resolution says publishers publish-ers cannot put the increased cost of tho paper on the consumer and In many Instances this Increased cost means tho confiscation of profltf and In others It creates actual loss A copy of the resolution I reso-lution also was presented by the dclega tin to the House Wayjumd Means committee com-mittee Washington I May 3The President I today sent the following nominations to tho Senate To be commissioner on I I I part of the United States on the Chilian I claims committee William Glover Gage of Michigan William II Hunt of Michigan Mich-igan to bo agent of the United Slates to the above commission War For appointment in the volunteer volun-teer army First Lieut Hugh Thoma SOIl Fortyeighth infantry to bo Cap Iluln |
