Show I VISIT OF DR UTTER i WILL PREACH AGAIN IN SALT I LAKE NEXT SUNDAY On His Way to Denver from Califor iHa Where Ho Attended Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary of Parents Rev David Utter pastor of Unity church of Denver and formerly of lIfts I city Is renewing acquaintance with oldtime friends Dr Utter camo to Salt Lake In 1S91 organized the First Unitarian society of this city and for four years or more was the pastor thereof He is on his way homo from California where ho attended the sixtieth six-tieth anniversary of the wedding of his parents both of whom have passed the eightfifth milestone of life Speaking of southern California Dr Utter says that Los Angeles Is the only place he visited that Is not a desert that within 100 miles of that city there are hundreds of deserted farms made desolate by the three years drought In that portion of the State that hun dretls of pcoplo itho had invested in tit farms In that section have been obliged to abandon them and scilc employment and livelihood in other portions of the State It was a delight Indeed said Dr Utter to reach Ogden and smell again the green pastures of Utah after having spent three weeks In the parched districts of California and rid ing over the Nevada deserts And > i me say right here that despite the fame of California fruit the peaches and pears of Utah and the winter ap ples surpass these of the Golden States I cannot say as much for the summer apples for the Astrakhans of California Califor-nia are beautiful and delicious During his stay In California Dr Utter had a pleasant visit with Prof C A Whiting formerly of this city whp Is giving lectures on histology and embryology at the Osteopathic Medical college in Los Angeles Asked as to his opinion of the advancement ad-vancement which Salt Lake had made In the almost five years since he left Dr Utter said it had been on his mind to ask if there was not a greater Salt Lake that he noted a wonderful Improvement In many directions in the streets particularly on South Main in the residence portions of the city The Salt Palace ho thought was a great attraction for the city and ho was pleased with the new University buildings saying they were Just In the right place What do you think of the political outlook in Celorado was then asked to which came the unhesitating reply I agree with what Gov Thomas said at Kansas City that If Bryan has a majority this year it will be much smaller than in 189G I know of many former Silver Republicans that are now becoming straight Rcnuhlleans Not that their view on the silver question has changed but they feel that for the present it is a dead Issue and that it Is i good policy to drop it for the present I am not enough of a politician to speak authoritatively but It would not surprise sur-prise me if Colorado wore found in the Republican column this year Dr Utter will remain Jn the city over Sunday and will speak at the Salt Lake Theater on that day During his stay here he Will endeavor to encourage the reorganization of the Unitarian church In this city for he feels that the Interest Is not dead and as heretofore here-tofore considers Salt Lake a splendid field for a liberal church Under ordinary circumstances the dancing floor put down at the Theater for the Woodmen last evening would be removed Manager Pypor however how-ever may keep the floor In its place furnishing chairs for the big congregation congrega-tion which is expected to be present on Sunday He has In mind the giving of a complimentary ball and light refreshments re-freshments to patrons of the Theater to celebrate the opening of the theatrical theatri-cal season and this function to which special Invitations if it is given will be issued Is expected to occur within a couple of weeks |
