Show INON MEN QUIT VORK All Members Amalgamated Association Are Out CONFIDENT THEY WILL WIN President Shaffer Declares That Not Only Will the Sheet and Hoop Combines Com-bines Come to Time but Plants of American Steel and Wire Company Will Bo Forced Into the Union Though at Present Those Mills Are Outside Conditions of Present Strike He Says Arc Peculiar Pittsburg Pa July 2There Is llltle change tonight In the strike situation of the sheet and hoop mills of the United Slates Steel corporation The officials of time Amalgamated association associa-tion continue to express themselves as confident of a successful outcome of the strike and that the nonunion mills of both the sheet stcol1 and steel hoop combine will become unionized during the summer The union men claim that they have several promises from the men in the nonunion mills to walk out as soon as It becomes necessary Thus far however how-ever none have goime out and all the mlon men have quit work President Shatter of the Amalgamated Amalga-mated association declares that not only will the sheet and hoop combines have to come to time hut the plants of the American Steel and Wire company com-pany AI1I bo forced into the union though at present these mills are outside out-side of the union The conditions of the present strike he said wero peculiar and no decided results were expected for ten lays or two weeks By that time the manufacturers manu-facturers having all necessary repairs at their mills completed would be anxious to resume operations The struggle would then begin In earnest The belief is quite general however that the real test will not begin until the close of the hot weather and the general resumption of business in the early fall and In the meantime it is thought that the conflicting Interests will see their way iclear to recede from the present positions President Shaffer mailed to the association asso-ciation lodges today a circular which directs the lodges to lay assessments upon their members to be used for the relief of members of the association associa-tion out of work The money collected will be placed in the general fund of the association The association has IorvycnvK been creating srikc fund and it la said now to amount tUbe tween 200000 and 100000 7 i The combine officials do not appear to be worrying over > the situation Some of them intimate that there maybe may-be a renewal of negotiations at anytime any-time and a settlement effected In outside out-side circles the belief is growing that the strike will be called off before It gets fairly well under way The announcement today that the sheet combination had cut prices occasioned occa-sioned surprise as it is known that all the mills have been busy and many orders remain unfilled The heaviest cut is on No 2 the standard gauge which Is reduced from 1335 per one hundred pounds to 310 The lighter gauges have been cut in price from l to 3 a ton The move puzzled the Amalgamated official and President Shatter said It has boon done merely mere-ly for the purpose of having an effect on the Independent sheet manufacturers manufactur-ers who have signed our scale The advisory board of the Amalgamated Amalga-mated association has not yet been called to meet lo consider the situation situa-tion but n meeting wil be held soon if the American Sheet Steel company shows no disposition to reopen negotiations nego-tiations President Slinffor says the mil for another conference will not rome from the Amalgamated association associa-tion as the ultimatum of that organization organi-zation was given at the last conference confer-ence |
