| Show ijllUu3ovEt1 OFFCERS House Expresses Itself Upon Hewletts Bill NEXF TERM THREE YEARS The Municipal Election Bill Will Pass but Will Provide That Next Term of City Officers Bo Three Years and Thereafter Three Years So That the Municipal Election and General Election Will Bo Held at the Same Time Hewlett Consents to ThreeYear Clause There seems to be practically no doubt that House bill No JK 1 by Hewlett Hew-lett having for Us object the holding of municipal elections at the time of the general elections will pacs lie House but in n materially amended form As originally intioduccd the bill contemplated the retention in ofllcc oC the present Incumbents until next year when the city elections would be held at the same lime as lie olhor elections AVhen the bill came up for third readIng read-Ing in tin1 House yesterday Mr Smith announced that he favored the bill so far as it provided for the change in the time of holding city elections but he did not favor lie holdover clause Sir I Smith then moved that the blllbe so j amended that the city officers would be eJected for only one year at the next election Mr Hewlett the father of the bill moved as an amendment that the ofll ecu be elected for three years at the next election and this was accepted by Mr Smith Mr Van Home opposed the measure on the ground that where more Important Import-ant olllces were being voted for there would be trading on time city ticket Mr Stuart also opposed tho measure for the reason that his people at Sandy had found the nonpartisan proposition to be a good one and he feared the bill ould force them into partisan politics Mr Smith and Mr Kelly both spoke Jn favor of partisan politics upon the ground that there wns then a political party lo be held responsible Mr Holx helmcr was of tt similar mind as was N L Mori Is Mr Axton favored the essence of the bill and was well satisfied with the present Salt Lake officers For lie purpose of securing the sense of the members as to the matter the following motions were put Motion No 1 that the present officers hold over was Ibst by a vote of 29 against the propotiltlon S MotiOn jNo L1 that the ofllcers be elected for one year nt the next city election was defeated by an overwhelming over-whelming vote Motion No 13 that the officers be elected for tlfrce years at the next olectloiij was carried by fully a two thirds vote The bill was then referred to the Committee Com-mittee on Judiciary with directions to report a new bill in accordance with the apparent desire of the members |
