ONE JOKE ON CHAUNCEY An Occasion When the Laugh Came His Way Most of the stories about Chauncey M Depew feature that famous jester jes-ter as a hero but occasionally one bears an Instance where the junior Senator Sen-ator from New York came out second best For some years Mr Depcw has fostered a grudge against Congressman Sercno E Payne This dates back to the Republican convention of 1892 when Depew thought he had a chance to be nominated for the Presidency Payne thought otherwise and so effectually effec-tually pointed out to the New York delegation the futility ot sticking by Depew further that they dropped his name Recently a dinner was given to which a number of men who figure prominently In national politics were invited Depew and Payne among the number Depew came late entering the room while Payne was flnishing Who Is It demanded Depew affecting af-fecting not to know Why its Payne Sereno Payne of Auburn Auburn Auburn said Depew musingly Well thot reminds me of an incident that happened some years ago W < used to have a roan In Grand Central station who as a regular gazetteer If you wanted to go to the lust suburb of the capital of Senegam bin he could tell you just what lines to take and where to change and all about It without looking at a map But that fellow was stuck once A man came Into the station and wanted a special train to Auburn Nobody In live place had ever heard of Auburn We summoned all our engineers and asked for volunteers to take a train there One after another they shook their heads but finally a young fellow spoke tin and said Here I havent any wife or family dependent on me Give me a good engine and a conductor and Ill tackle the job We gave tile Intrepid fellow his pick of the road his companions bade him nn uff ° ctlng farewell fare-well and he set out Two weeks afterward after-ward we got a telegram from him He had arrived at Auburn He hadfound It after the most awful experiences Today gentlemen that engineer white before bin time is known an the man who found Auburn This of course turned the laugh on Congressman Payne but It was quickly quick-ly turned back again when that gentleman gen-tleman remarked quietly Chauncey youd better hire that I I engineer next time you start for the White HOUHC Loulavllle Times
