Show TALK ABOUT SWEATSHOPS Bishop Potter Testifies Before Industrial Indus-trial Commission Washington Nov 9 Bishop Henry C Potter fo New York testified today before the Industrial commission He spoke on sweatshops arbitration and other questions He said he had more confidence In voluntary organizations to meet the evils that grew out of the sweatshop system tlun In legislation He advocated 0 permanent commission commis-sion to mediate between capitalists and labor organizations and was disinclined disin-clined to favor compulsory arbitration W Ith reference to tlu recent anthracite coal strike the bishop was asked for his remedy for differences where employers em-ployers absolutely i ejected every attempt at-tempt at mediation with employees especially where the public at large would suffer from the cessation of oji orations incident to the dispute eratom U I know of no coercive measure that I could recommend to meet such a condition he replied He placed more value In sound public opinion solving the trouble than any coercive measures mea-sures and thought the remedj really lay l in the intelligent organizatIon of labor Compulsory arbitration he conceded con-ceded was less an evil than a long strike or a lookout He commended life disposition oi workingmen to accept ac-cept any suggestion looking to settlements settle-ments with employers There was n general feeling among employers he I I said In favor of organization among employees attributable both to a spirit I S of fairness mil a preference to deal with A responsible l union rather than With 1 Individual employees Wih commended the organization of chambermaids in the West to ascertain the solvency and Mmractcr of employers employ-ers Labor he said Is not well rewarded re-warded voluntarily by anyone That was the keynote cf the labor question |
