Show 1 BOLD BURGLARS AT MURRAY RUINED SAFE OF MURRAY MERCANTILE MER-CANTILE COMPANY Tried Sledge Hammers and Chisel but Could Not Reach Valuables I Large SUm Money Inside The store of the Murray Mercantile company was burglarized at about 1 oclock Tuesday morning The men who I did the work were evidently of the cautious II cau-tious kind Before they attempted to effect an entrance they decided to see whether there was anybody sleeping on the premises To fully decide this they I picked up a big piece of slag and tossed through n window The sound of the I i fall and the rattling of glass did not awaken anybody In the store for the reason that there was no one there but it was distinctly heard by a neighbor about a block away who thought it was I the report of a gun Thus encouraged the thieves proceeded to enter the store and attack the safe They used as their weapons a couple of sledge hammers ham-mers which they had stolen from the Oregon Short Line with which they knocked of all the knobs and other protuberances pro-tuberances on the exterior of the safe and falling to gain an entrance this Way they then proceeded to chisel do 1 ing great damage lo the safe They I I failed to make an entrance however I and must have been suddenly fright I I cned away for within a short distance I of them was a try containing two doz watches which they had overlooked over-looked Manager Townsend said last evening that the safe was in such a condition that he found It necessary to send for an expert to open It and when that work was accomplished it was ruined beyond nil repair That and the I breakage to the windows however was the only loss the company sustained and while Mr Townsend did not care to say how much money there was In the safe he did admit that had the burglars bur-glars succeeded in getting Into the repository re-pository they would have been rewarded re-warded with a very good haul |
