Show DIED IN CITY JAIL PBISOHEB PASSES AWAY IN DKUNKHOUSE Was Found Lying Unconscious on Sidewalk and Placed in Jail Four Hours Later Death Was Discovered A middleaged man evidently a laborer la-borer but whoso identity has not yet been clearly established died In the drunkhouse of the city jail late last night The cause of his death is also unknown although the police believe the effects died from that the unfortunate fects of overindulgence In Intoxicants He was thrown Into the drunkhouse shortly before 7 oclock in the evening and was found dead about four hours later The body was lying on the stone floor of the cell with the face upturned and covered with blood which had I flowed from his nostrils When discovered dis-covered in that position the man had evidently been dead for some time There was not a scrap of paper or anything about his clothing that divulged di-vulged his Identity His only effects consisted of a heavy sliver watch and two linen handkerchiefs The watch was recognized by Desk Sergt Pratt as the same that had been removed from the pocketS of a man arrested for drunkenness Monday night Officer Burt who made the arrest Monday night was summoned and he Identl lied the dead man as the same person Reference to the police records showed the name of W N Pettinger as that given by the unfortunate on the occasion oc-casion of his arrest Monday The name does not appear in the City Director and the police were unable to locate the residence of friends of any such person last night although the matter will most probably be cleared up today to-day The dead man appeared to be about 10 years of age fairly well dressed slight of frame baldheaded heavy dark mustache and the calloused cal-loused hands of an industrious laborer Before he was taken to the police station sta-tion the man was noticed staggering eastward on Third South street Several Sev-eral times he fell to the sidewalk but on each occasion he managed to regain his feet and cdntinue onward Finally he fell forcibly In front of the residence of O F Davis at 363 East Third South street and lay there until word was sent to the police Officer Lincoln responded re-sponded to find the man unconscious with all the appearances of being In a drunkei stupor With the assistance of bystanders he placed him in the patrol pa-trol wagon and removed him to the drunkhouse Chief Hilton was told of the mans condition and he too deckled de-ckled that too much liquor was responsible re-sponsible Accordingly no further attention at-tention was paid to his predicament Justice Dana Smith viewed the remains re-mains and decided that an Inquest will in all probability be necessary City Physician King examined the body but was unable to determine the cause of death stating that a postmortem would be required to determine the exact ex-act cause The body was removed to the undertaking establishment of Joseph W Taylor |
