P Havener and Rev Mr Bagby Welcome the Delegates to the City Annual Address of President Tolles Listened to with Interest Todays Programme The first session of the twelfth annual i convention I of the Utah Christian Endeavor En-deavor union held last evening at the First Presbyterian church war a splendid f splen-did success The church was crowded with delegates from local and outside organizations A thoroughly enjoyable programme was presented and the Interest In-terest shown throughout was very great The church presented an attractive I attrac-tive appearance with Its dozens of C IS I banners and beautiful palms placed ont on-t i the platform One of the features of the evening was the music rendered by j I the choir specially trained by Rev Mr I Shanks for the convention Kev Dr I Beach iOf Denver who came especially to be present at the convention made the address of the evening and Impressed l Im-pressed his hearers most favorably He Is n winsome speaker with a rich voice I a ready How of words and wit and his remarks went straight to the heart of his hearers The president of the union I Harry N Tolles presided About 123 delegates are expected to be In attendance I attend-ance at todays sessions a number of whom arc from outside cities and towns A song service lasting some fifteen minutes preceded the greetings Rev F E Rlgclow of the Plymouth Congregational Congre-gational church offered the opening prayer and this was followed by l the singing of the convention hymn Jesus Lives and Jesus Lends Harry N role State president of the union then Introduced I V P Havener who on behalf of the local I union welcomed the visiting I i del < tes to the t convention REV MR I BAGBYS WELCOME Hev W H Rah of the Christian I church welcomed the delegates In behalf be-half of the churches of the city He I said ho uas prepared lo speak for all I lCflPJujina Lions and to extend to I each and every delegate a most hearty welcome wel-come He compared tlu speakers on time platform to I ho I big guns o the I lalo war with Spain and wild It was not the big guns thai did the most effective ef-fective work nor would It be the big gnns of thc convention hut rather the little ones that would be the most effective I ef-fective He hoped from the convention that each and every one present would gather new spirit to go month to labor the inon diligently for Christ for the coming twehc 1 months Miss Row men Webster of Ogden representing the Baptist Young Peoples I I union made a most earnest response to the words of welcome extended and urged upon all present to pray live and I work as they had never done before to win the State of Utah for Jesus Christ j In tho absence of Miss Jayno of Logan Ian I-an who HIS to have responded l for the Epworth Leaguers Til T Eaton thanked I I the Christian Endeavor society for taking them in and said that ho I I I appreciated very much the spirit which prompted the executive committee of the Y P S i1 IS to reach out and take In all the young Christian workers of the State Rev S IT Goodwin of Prove responded re-sponded In behalf of the Christian Endeavor En-deavor societies of the State and wan most cordial In his thanks for the words of welcome extended l He said that I while the Christian young people maybe may-be banded together under different names and different denominations still i there was u mark which went deeper than any badge which they worea I mark which was not the gift of man but the gift of God they recognize usa us-a basis of all I true Christian union the life of Jesus Christ I After a beautifully I i have taken be more faithfully observed i DR BgACJ WAS PLEASING Mr Will Slbley sang i solo very acceptably ac-ceptably and then the Rev Dr Clarence Clar-ence T Brown Introduced the speaker of the evenlnjr Rev David N Beach D 1 D of Denver As Dr Beach stepped I to the front of the I platform all the I young people members of Christian societies so-cieties in the State rose and gave him the Chaiitanqua salute The speaker first poke of the f1 tIn I t-In which he brought to the Utah convention con-vention from two former residents of venton Salt Lake Messrs Kepler and Sllmp I son now residents of Denver He also I brought a resolution from the committee commit-tee at Denver preparing for the great convention In that city In October next In which the committee extended fraternal fra-ternal greetings und a most cordial Invitation In-vitation to attend the Colorado convention con-vention I Dr Beach then called attention to I the great Christian Endeavor movement move-ment and asked his hearers to consider < I how many sided It Is I to think of the ships that will put to sea In the early summer months from American ports to go to the great International convention con-vention In London of the great variety nlon I I of peoples that are Interested In tho movement The speaker told of tho work of Rev Charles R Bibs of Massachusetts who I came Into tho Rocky mountain country coun-try saw the needs of the organization of schools In New Mexico and Utah i I I I and was the miana of their organization organiza-tion how on one ot his visits to Massachusetts I Mas-sachusetts one of the young women of his congregation volunteered to go West and teach In one of those mission schools and the seed of the Christian Endeavor movement In I Utah which I has grown and nourished was planted by that noble woman In the little mission school Speaking of the good to be accomplished accom-plished l by the Christie Endeavorers Dr Beach referred to the fact that more than half the people of the densely populated State of Massachusetts arc living without saloons because they I voted l to put them 1 out ant there is a public sentiment that keeps them out i And the Endcaorers were given credit for not only this but for the doing away with saloons In several other Massachusetts tow ns Including the city of Salem MOVEMENTS SOCIAL SIDE As to making the convention the great success which was desired Dr Beach said I It t would not rest with time speakers or the president but with Individual to make It every present I a success Another side of the I movement which was most necessary to Its HUCCCSS said Ilee a Dr Beach was Its grand social side that Christ recognized the 1 social I side i II if religion when he divided the mob Into companies ot llfty and then bode his disciples to feed them with the t loaves and fishes that when they were divided into companion of llfty they ceased to be n mob and became the beginning o the great church of Christ The Christian Endeavor movement stands fOI loyalty to rhi 1st and that Is why we are gathered together In Utah to further his kingdom After the I singing of a hymn by he congregation Hey A l1 Henry pronounced pro-nounced the benediction and the convention con-vention adjourned until this morning A business meeting will be held at the Collegiate Institute at ft > oclock At 10 oclock 1 quiet hour service will be conducted by Rev George Bailey At IL oclock Dr Beach wi I i I conduct a training I class at 11 there will be an open parliament In the afternoon at 2 oclock a junior rally will be held under the direction of Mrs E E Shepard and this promises prom-ises to be one of the most Interesting features of tho convention From u to 5 oclock will he devoted to The I Model Hour and Tho Expansion Hour divided Into a number of subheads sub-heads In I the i evening another session will I also be held which will be devoted to i papers on work of the C E auxiliaries and an addre bv Dr Beach As tho attendance is expected to be very large Sunday evening It has been decided to hold meeting at both the First Presbyterian and First Methodist I churches Dr Beach will speak at both meetings and Rev Dr Brown will speak at the Presbyterian church and Rev Mr Bagby at the Methodist I |
