| Show LAKE VESSEL WRECKED Pere Marquette Car Ferry Steamer Is Lost ALL CREW SAVED BUT ONE r While Entering Harbor at Luding ton Michigan Sho Strikes a Bar Disabling Eer Machinery and Breaking Hcr Main Peed Steamplpo One of the Crew Wns Scalded to Death Two Others Also Terribly Scalded and ilany Received End Burns S j 1I I 1 Ludlugton Mich Dec 22WIiIe entering Ludlngton harbor last midnight mid-night during a heavy gale the Pere Marauetto car ferryboat No 16 struck a bar disabling her machinery and breaking the main feed steamplpe letting l great volumes 6C steam escape Mike Taft a coal passer was1scalded to death two other coal passers whose names are unknown were terribly ter-ribly scalded and many others who were in the hold received bad burns Those aboard experienced great hardships during the nine hours that followed before they were rescued The accident happened at midnight and during the remainder of the night there was neither light nor heat on the boat while the wind was bitterly cold Great seas rolled across the I deck and ice formed wherever the water fell The vessel arrived off the harbor from Milwaukee midnight after a tempestuous voyage In spite of the heavy seas and strong wind from an unfavorable quarter Capt Charles Thompson decided to hazard an entrance en-trance to the harbor The boat at an unfortunate moment sunk low in the hollow of a big wave and struck the bar with terrific force the shock completely com-pletely disordering the machinery Left without power the vessel drifted and Capt Thompson ordered the boat scuttled in sixteen feet oC water When day broke the life saving crew by means oC their cannon threw a line to the wrecked craft and began rescuing the crew with their breeches buoy apparatus and the entire crew of thirtythree men and the body of Taft were taken off the wreck One by one the iiien were hauled over the churning Ice on the suspended cable The operation occupied four hours nnd was witnessed with breathless interest in-terest by an Immense crowd of people It Is believed that the boat > will 1 prove a total wreck With her cargo she is vajued at 200000 I |
