Show NATIONAL HOSPITAL DAY May 12, 1921, was first set aside as National Hospital day. That first celebration marked the 101 anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. In ,1854 when sent to Crimea by England to take charge of military nursing, Miss Nightingale organized the care of wounded soldiers. Nursing since has developed into one of the most essential services in hospitals today. As each year one person in every ten are hospitalized for some reason, hospitals are an important center of every community. The care given sick and injured there is an important factor in reducing death rates and in lengthening lengthen-ing the life span. Hospitals are health centers where skill and equipment are provided for persons helpless to care for themselves. There is no holiday in the fight against sickness or disease. The medical and nursing profession work constantly to attain at-tain a higher degree of scientific exactness. Constantly improving their facilities, hospitals continually continu-ally add to the equipment as new treatments, new methods are devised to use on people seeking health and life. As every person is likely to find hospitalization necessary neces-sary once in ten years, the invitation extended us by hospitals hos-pitals May 12 to visit them is an opportunity to see for ourselves what fine work is being done in hospitals and to gain some idea of the recent advances of medicine. |
