Show THE CHEEK OF HIM Edgar Stanton Maclay refuses to resign re-sign He demands that he have a hearing hear-ing ancl claims that lIe is protected in Tils place by the civil service laws He Is probably wrong about this but if he Is correct in j that claim then the civil service laws are badly In need of amendment F rlf It is true that a servant of the Government can assail falsely and venomously an officer high in the service and of honorable career stirring1 the country to Its depths and involving great cost and trouble and still be able to stay in the Governments service against the will of the President Presi-dent and practically the whole country coun-try then Indeed have made a sad blunder In our tenure of office regulations regula-tions He is carried on the rolls as a laborer and it Is incredible to think that he can retain his place In spite of the authorities There ought not to bo tho slightest question about tho discharge dis-charge of Maclay there ought not to be any quibbling about his claim to stay in ofllce and his desire for retention so that he can write more books is in itself an insult to the public he has written too many books already and if his discharge dis-charge will prevent him writing anymore any-more so much the better Park Benjamin Benja-min has thoroughly exploded Maclays claim that he had the approval of eminent emi-nent naval officers and officials In his attack upon Schley he had no such backing There is not a thing to say for Maclay he Is an offense and must be abated as a nuisance |
