Show OBSERVE ROSH HASHONA JEWISH PEOPLE BEGIN NEW S YEAR CELEBRATION Observance Began Last Evening With n Sermon by Rabbi Reynolds I Reference to Assault on President 1 According to the traditions of the Jewish people yesterday completed the five thousand six hundred and sixty S I second year since the creation of the I world and all over the universe noSh Ilashona the beginning tho year was observed Commencing with Rosh Hashona and ending with Yom Klppur atonement day the ten days of penitence are the most sacred of any In the Jewish calendar Each year the Jewish new year Is becoming more Important and faithful Jews cherish it moro than any other I j I festival The day of atonement Is one of fasting and at Its close those who participate in the ceremony arc In a i frame of mind to live according to their highest Ideals the most perfect I life of which they are capable Rosh Hashona was observed In Salt Lake last evening At the Synagogue a very large gathering was present Rabbi Reynolds delivered the sermon i confining his remarks principally to the J significance of the day and tho need of every mans taking an Inventory as It were of his moral self at the beginning be-ginning of each year and resolving anew to lead a better and still better lifeRabbi Rabbi Reynolds spoke feelingly of the deplorable calamity which has befallen be-fallen the Nation Ills belief was that such crimes are due to the materialistic materialis-tic tendency of the age that people have put such store by material things that the higher Ideals are slipping away Consequently when things do not go to suit some people they become be-come pessimistic brood over what to them seem Irreparable wrongs and the s result of the brooding Is often crime Dr Reynolds urged the necessity of teaching tho young to seek after spiritual spirit-ual rather than materialistic things and he thought If this course was pur nued much of the discontent and heartburning heart-burning which leads to crime would be I done away with A distinct feature of lost nights service ser-vice was the musicthe traditional music of the race ages old but ever I beautiful and dear to the hearts of the I Jewish people The music was given under the direction of Mrs Kate Bride well Anderson the other members of the choir being Mm Andrews Miss Dwyer Messrs Ashworth Copley and Sands r Services will be hold at the Synagogue Syna-gogue this morning at 10 oclock |
