formerly occupied argeU upon cupied by the illfated Peck concentrator concen-trator at Park C ty will be fired up for the winter campaign this morning and with every assurance of a most successful one Hitherto tho efforts of Its founders have been devoted largely to the perfecting of their method which Is making a commercial proposition out of wliat has hitherto been a vastc and In its new home a commodious structure perched above the railway more astonishing achievements are promised Discussing the work that was modestly begun on zinc tailings from the Anclnr mill a short time ago Manager Rice of the Anchor Mining company said last night that the success suc-cess of the undertaking had been established es-tablished by Messrs May no Leonard and that the industry so far as it related re-lated to the zinc ores of Park City had I como to stay Brlelly the process consists I con-sists of a concentration of the zinc I product the produce of this then passing pass-ing Into a mammoth roaster where by I the application oC heat the Iron is anasnetlzed From this 11 pusses I through a magnetic separator by which I the iron is eliminated and the product unade ready for the market Not oijly does the zinc find a ready market as4 it Is now dressed but the iron carryIng carry-Ing the precious metals In Email percentages I per-centages is eagerly sought by the I smelters With this treatment the zinc product from the Anchor mill that I for a long time was permitted to go down the gulch Is made to divide a profit between the mining company and i the owners of the sine plant It le I Jiot a munificent one to be sure hut I in tho course oC a year it affords the kitty a pretty good Income A previous pre-vious attempt to handle the zinc product pro-duct from the Anchor was when Hon I T R Jones purchased of the company I about 10000 tons of the tailings and hegan the erection of a Peck concentrator concen-trator with which to dress them This was a disappointment however and the concentrator was abandoned In stock the owners of the Maync Leonard plant by whom considerable money has been expended in perfecting perfect-ing it have about 12000 tons of zinc bearing material now at the surface while to this said Manager Rice about twentyfive tons of tailings are being added daily by the Anchor mill There Is a big Held into which to reach however how-ever and there is no reason to believe other than that the treatment of zinc tailings Is as permanent an industry as any other In the camp There are the California the Comstock the Glencoe and several other dumps to which to appeal and certainly the founders of the new plant are assured the support of every inhabitant of the camp Another 0 X Consignment t The management of the O K out of Milford will reach the market on Tuesday Tues-day with another consignment of high grade copper ore although the feature In this lot will be divided with the yel low metal which shows a valuation iicocrdinpr to the assays of 360 per ton With these values in gold and the copper ruling at 35 per cent or better It is not difficult to see where the company com-pany Is going to get its breadmoney from In the meantime plans arecrys taHlzlng that will provide the company I with furnaces of sufficient capacity to I treat over 100 tons of ore dally and with these ou the ground the large ton nage now on the dump which shows an average around S per cent copper with good values in gold and silver will be easily converted into readv money That the furnaces will be in stalled looks reasonably well assured I at this time for according to latest measurements the ore expOsed is suf iiieint to keep them running indefi nitely There was a period in the ca I reer of the Dixie that it had the same embarrassment to overcome but crowd yesterday and that thc > East wants the deposits of Iron mountain just as bad he feels assured The discovery which was sold by Mr Kimberly was made a mile east of uny that had been previously made on the range In question anti while the development devel-opment was limited the purchasers were willing to take It as a prospect and the scarcity of Iron in the older countries at this time is the strongest argument in favor of the deal involving involv-ing the Iron mountain properties Mr Jclinings himself was for many years identified with the iron mines of the Kesaba range and says that while discoveries dis-coveries similar to that by Mr Kimberly Kim-berly have been made at periods when They were most needed they are poor things for the future lo icly on and the manufacturer must look to the I West Visited the California The mines and mill of the California Mining company above Park City were yesterday visited by Messrs Say tier and Bauer by which the control waa recently Stevens Houghton Mich Nov 17Tue last shipments of cooper by lake vessels are being made and the season of navigation naviga-tion will end In a few days aa far as the forwarding of copper is concerned as all the lake smelters are located on the Portage lake waterways which arc arms of Lake Superior the ports oC which are closed by Ice several weeks before the last belated steamer cTrags her Iceencrusted tow down the length of Lake Superior early In December For three years past the lake mines have shipped steadily by rail marling Immediately after the oiose yf lake nay igation and continuing until April fol lowing This winter promises to see similar rail shipments beginning despite de-spite the many published statements or an Immense surplus of copper held by the Amalgamated company or its tales Agency the United Metals Selling company i a By the way where Is the Immense accumulation of copper stored Who are the men whp have ecn It with their own eyes or falling such who timid where are the men who have seen the men who have seen the copper Two months ago the largest known ac cumulation of copper was a trillo loss than 7000 lons at the Dollar Bay smel I ters opposite Houghlon and this has slnco been shipped East Two months ago the United Stales was full of men who did not know of anv such accumulation accu-mulation then came the Casev clrcu hat ostensibly sent out to consumers by a discharged employee of time Amalgamated Amal-gamated sales agency in which It was slated that the Amalgamated company had accumulated 135000000 pounds of uiiHold copper Wlio and where Is Mr Casey and why did he phllanthropi cally send his circular lo every broker handling copper shares and why was ho fired If lie was fired and if he wasnt fired why wasnt he and where are the think of a great variety of other questions lo ask bul to repeat where Is that surplus copper stored That soruliw all unsuspected by everyone until Mr Casey Irradiated the gloom by his remarkable circular Jn simulated typewriting and oalen I Slblj calculated for lie copper eon I Burners bul which found Us way lo all flcalmv In copper shares That surplus so suddenly discovered wis slated bv the modest amid retiring CHIV to be 300000000 pounds and now by lie aid of the press it has swelled to a round mOOOOOO pounds Two hundred mll lion pounds of copper amounts to 100000 tons more than twice the annual production pro-duction of the Calumet t Heels It would load SOOO freight cars of twenty I I tons capacity thirtyfive miles of solid freight trafn On what siding between Yavapal county Arizona and Bound i Brook N J are there 5000 carloads of copper concealed from public gaze The I I copper is nol In Iloughton county The smelters here are bare It is i not In 1 I I Europe the visible supply there Is carefully watched and is now the smallest for many years Will the gentlemen gen-tlemen who assure us that there Is a floating surplus of 65000 to 100000 tons of copper In this country please name the place or places where It is secreted I a I The sad truth of the matter Is that r the ayernge speculator is a lobster pardon the Inelegance of the term but none other fits nnd is i potted with great ease by the expert lobstcrmen I Ten weeks ago the speculative world I was cocksure that thu Amalgamated Copper company had the metal sltua lion so well In hand that It could never escape and at present the average man Interested In copper Iy In trepidation lest the unfortunate Amalgamated company which was able to pay only I 232000 for its last quarterly divi 1 dead should be forced to the wall some night while he Is asleep Perhaps Per-haps the truth lies midway between the h thilt and the cold fit Is it not possible that the Amalgamated company com-pany TVIS not omnipotent last August I and that it is not altogether powerless I today The Amalgamated people are old hands at the speculative game Thoy learned the business in Standard Oil which was for many years a stock that kept its owners guessing guessIng guess-Ing whether Ihey were coming millionaires mil-lionaires or present paupers The time I chosen for the formation of the Amalgamated Amal-gamated company was either the I best or the worst of times according accord-ing to the point of view the best of times for placing stock because I copper share were booming and the public hot for profits the worst of I times If the company was organized 10 sccuic permanent control of the best mines because the metal was then selling so high hat control of mines could be had only at top prices Is II I not possible that the Amalgamated I people the real powers behind the company not the owners of small lots I of Its shares were playing a dual game not a double game as might be asserted by some losers but a game with iwo disllnct objects In view one of which objects might be the domination domi-nation of the copper market as the petroleum market is dominated by the same Interests and the other object ob-ject tho making of money by lie rise and fall of the shares na it is said money has been made by the same people In the rise and fall of Standard Oil shares Is not this possible < a Thunder rarely comes from a clear sky and clouds are seen before the rain falls Jiv the natural world coming com-ing events cast their shadows before I but in the world oC finance the shadows are apt to be darkest afterward Why was there such a sudden change from apparent mastery of the situation to apparent loss of control And by the way what are the Amalgamated people actually saying Others are talking of them but to just what have the prudent managers of the Amalgamated Amalga-mated company committed I themselves them-selves It is easier to ask questions than to answer them and this letter Is one of questions rather than ot answers Its mission is to make people peo-ple think to cause those who have temporarily gone out of the thinking business to cease from taking everything every-thing secondhand The questions about tho copper surplus are pertinent If It exists where is it After considerable con-siderable search for my own Information Informa-tion I am able to find but a small part of the alleged surplus It is only fair that those who assure us of Its existence should give a few detailed figures There are many interested parties and the confirmation of our worst fears by cold statistics would afford at least a melancholy satisfaction satisfac-tion akin to that of following the remains re-mains of a friend lo their last resting place x TC the Amalgamated company has actually accumulated a surplus of 200000000 pounds while holding the price of the metal at 38 cents It has been guilty of a very great imprudence impru-dence and one that nust seriously impair the confidence of thinking men not in the probity but In the business judgment and common sense of its management To hold its own copper to the value of 35000000 while permitting per-mitting Us rivals lo obtain the full benefit of the high price maintained by the Amalgamated would be supreme folly yet this Is what the majority of people seem to think has been done If true the action shows the Amalgamated Amalga-mated management to be lacking In the rudiments of business sagacity that is unless time entire plan of operations opera-tions of the Amalgamated has been akin to a bunco game and this would scarcely be maintained by even the most critical Wall street morality is a peculiar article but there are limits beyond which even the boldest operators would not care to go The Amalgamated management while it might toy with life market prices and derive both satisfaction and profit therefrom Is composed of men who could scarcely afford to engage In tIme goldbrick game even were they disposed dis-posed in that direction Let the men who have facts be heard from There has been an elegant sufficiency suf-ficiency of guessing and some of the guesswork has been very coarse HORACE J
