S FLAG The present form of the United States Flag that of thirteen Colonies and a star for or each state was by Congress on April 4 1818 On June 14 1717 the Constitutional Congress voted that the time flag should have thirteen stripes and thirteen white stars on I I a field of blue bl le On January 13 1794 when wUen Vermont and amid Kentucky were w re admitted to the Union Congress voted that the th flag should be chang chang- changed ed and should have fifteen stripes and fifteen stars fifteen stars beginning with May 1 1 1797 The Time though thorough of Con Con- Congress Congress Congress gress was to l add a stripe and a astar aslar astar star for each state admitted to the tho Union By 1818 some some twenty states had been admitted to the Union Time The flag at that time had 15 IS stripes and 15 IS stars as Con Con- Congress Congress Congress gress had voted on Mayl 1797 upon upon the time admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the time Union It became apparent that it would bbc impracticable impracticable impracticable cable to add adda a star and a stripe for each new state and on April 4 1818 the flag was ordered redesigned to contain thirteen alternate stripes of red and white and a white star on a field of blue for each state It was wa's also ordered at that time that with each state admitted to the time Union a J. astar astar star should be added and such ad ad- addition addition should take effect on the th following Fourth of July The flag flig fla has been made in accordance with that design since April 4 4 1818 At the present time it contains thirteen alternate stripes of red and white for the original thirteen Colonies and 48 43 white Stars tars on a field of blue representing the 48 states of the time thou nion i. i |
