oclock last evening it was reported to Health Commissioner King by Dr Wltchcr that Fire Chief Dcvlne I I Mrs Devlne and their three children had smallpox Dr King made an Investigation In-vestigation which showed that the lire department had been exposed to the contagion through coming In contact with the anilcted family who reside ou the premises It was therefore found necessary to quarantine not only the Chief and his family but the entire department I de-partment CHILD SICK TWO WEEKS Chief Devlnes youngest child a girl I between one and two years of age was taken sick about Iwo weeks ago und Dr Wilther was called to attend It Ho I summoned Drs Bower and MriniLlinn In consultation but at thai time the its ease was not far enough advanced to be diagnosed and Dr Bower did not seethe see-the child uguln An eruption broke out which Dr Wilcher pronounced to be chickenpox which Is I quite prevalent at this time The child got along nicely I and now is on the fair way to recovery Two or three clays ago the Chief I his wife and the other two chll then a girl of 1 and a boy of 6 began to feel slightly 111 but Here about the house as usual Yesterday evening they became worse and the attending physician physi-cian Dr Witcher reported tho cases including1 that of the child taken two weeks ago as smallpox a view which was concurred in by Dr Monulmn I The cases however are regarded as light lightWILL BE REMOVED TODAY I Dr King will make arrangements this morning to have the entire family removed today to a house outsIde the City in the neighborhood of the pest house the latter nol being large enough to accommodate more than the fifteen patients who are there now The members mem-bers of the Ore department are under strict quarantine except that they will be allowed to go out to fires being removed to a thoroughly Isolated place DR MONAHANS STATEMENT Dr Monuhan slated last night that ho was called in by Dr Wilcher and saw the youngest child two weeks ago when it was first taken ill It was then impossible to tell what the ailment was and the doctor said he did not see the child again until last evening when he examined all the patients and without hesitation pronounced their ailment smallpox I understand under-stand said the doctor that Dr Witcher watched the case very closely close-ly and he spoke to me about it several sev-eral times after I had seen It llrst but I necr pronounced it chickenpox at nny time because when I saw It I could not tell what it was K1LPACK CHILD TAKEN SICK Dr King said last evening that one of the children Jit the Kilpack residence resi-dence on F street which has been i quarantined for len days was taken I sick yesterday but the symptoms were nol sulllclently advanced to allow of a diagnosis I REPORT OF CASES CONCEALED Dr Bcatty says he has been informed on reliable authority that a number of mild cuses of smallpox exist in the city which have not been reported to the Board of Health The parties are concealing the fact of the existence of tho sickness to avoid the Inconvenience of being quarantined A thorough investigation in-vestigation will be made and those responsible re-sponsible for the cases not being reported re-ported if it is found that smallpox really exists will be severely dealt with |
