Show FIRE IN GAlEt A BLOCK Building Seriously Threatened Threat-ened for a Time S i STARTED IN TAYLOR SHOP I I I J I Tho Prompt Work of the Fire Department De-partment Quickly Quenched the Flames Which Had Assumed Large Proportions in n Brief Period of Time Blozo Started in a Tailor I 5 Shop on State Street Side Loss t S I Building Estimated at 500 Loss Ito I-to Tailoring Establishment 550 I I I Thi The Galena block on the northwest corner of State and Second South streets was threatened for a time last evening with serious damage by fire A blaze broke out In the tailoring establishment of Samuel Kartun In the State Street side of the building and before the apparatus from station aPJrtua i I No 1 could arrive the flames had I quickly leaped through the back door and up to the cornice of time building The cornice wag quickly ablaze and the fire made Its way Into u space between be-tween the roof and ceiling The building build-ing Is not fitted out with fire partitions parti-tions as at present required by ordinance l ordi-nance and but for a goodsized stream of water which was thrown on In the nick OC time the roof of the entire structure would soon have been on fire LOSS ABOUT 1000 I As It Is the building was only damaged dam-aged to the extent of 500 and the contents of tho tailoring establishment were dcstroedwlh a loss estimated by the owner at 550 The fire brolce out a fyw moments after 680 when a light partition was discovered ablaze by Miss Otto a yaung lady who was In charge of the place at thc time She ran out Into the street and gave the alarm Two husky privates of the gallant Twenty third infantry who happened to be I passing entered the room and tried to I beat out the fire but It gained on them I and finally they were fsrced to retreat Upon leaving the soldiers carried out a table and several bolts of cloth Officer Roberts sent In an alarm and In a short time the fire apparatus was on hand The flames had In the meantime mean-time spread with remarkable rapidity and were darting from the front and rear entrances A large fiame nearly fifty feet high was leaping up the rear wall above the cornice Dense clouds of smoke poured through the offices op the second floor and the police had to order several of the occupants to leave their rooms directly di-rectly over the fire Three lines of hose were laid and in twenty minutes the fire was under control I con-trol In an hoUr and a quarter It was entirely out The contents of the tailor shop were ruined large holes were eaten Into the ceiling and walls and the large plate glass windows were smashed ORIGIN OF FIRE Just how the fire started Is not posi I tively known but it Is thought that the S partition caught fire from a gasoline 0 gnsolne stove which was burning near by Proprietor Kartun estimates his loss at 550 with 300 insurance The loss of GOO on the building is fully covered by insurance Who Galena block was recently purchased by Hohry Phlpps of Plttsburg There arcs two other losers by the I I fire Mrs Isabel Brush who rooms In the building had the contents of her apartments damaged by smoke and water and C F Tauner another 1 roomer suffered in a like manner |
