Show AGENT MYTON IN TOWN DISCUSSES PROPOSED LEASING I OF GRAZING LANDS Indians Disposed to Object to the Feeding of Sheep on the Reservation Reserva-tion Description of Ranges I Agent II P Myton of the Llntah Indian In-dian reselvn lion arrived ycslerday from Fort Duchcsne and registered at the KnutBford Mr Myton said lust oven lug I am here in furtherance of the lease of tho 700000 acres of grazing lands In the reservation Preston Nut ter who was the lust lessee rented the lands for 7100 But while of course the bids arc not yet op nsd I think we may assume that the lowest will prove a much higher figure say from 12000 to 15000 the bids to be opened at the reservation March llth next As the i lands arc held by the Government In 1 J trust for the Indians they receive all j the receipts and have a good deal to I say as to the provisions of the lease The Indians have been opposed to let I ling sheep on the reservation lands be ing under the Impression lint they I cropped the grass down too close and S then trampled in what was left They I are however being disabused of this j I Idea I have watched the operations of II I the sheep and can say that by not too close hercllug or keeping them on one I spot too long all such trouble as Just suggested dan easily be avoided The I j r j sheep did ho damage last year but ate down the underbrush and Immediate I ground growths thus preventing forest I lines As to the forest reserve I dont l know what will be done with thai as It Is entirely outside of my jurisdiction I but I never heard ahy complaint about the sheep that were summered In there Representatives of Eastern packing houses have been out to the reservation trying to secure the lands In question But the lands will be leased to the highest bidder nnd by dividing them Into sections such as are best adapted for cattle will be reserved for that purpose pur-pose and those that nre better adapted I to sheep grazing will bo leased for sheep alonA Thus there need be no conflict between the two Interests and each will be appropriately cared fur There are three ranges to be leased for live years from April 1st next Range No 1 covers 2SOOOO acres and runs from Meek Springs to Upper Duchesno bridge to Duchesne nnd Strawberry river junction and lo the mouth and head waters of Indian creek thence to lie southwest boundary line of tho reservation opposite to the headwaters head-waters of Timber creek and down to the south fork of Strawberry river thence up the river and to Meek Springs Range two runs east from the northwest boundary of the reservation between Duchesne and Strawberry rivers east to Red creek and then to Willow Springs east to fleck Springs south to South branch of Strawberry and to mouth of Timber creek up to time latters headwaters and southwest to reservation line containing In all 3200 0 acres Range three runs from the northwest boundary of the reservation reserva-tion on the Duchesne divide northeast S to Bald mountain south to Duchesne river junction to Sand creek south to Red creek up the creek and west to point of beginning It contains 100000 acres Lessees must protect their ranges from trespass The requirements require-ments in detail Included In tho leasing of these surplus grazing lands will be found In full In the printed proposals i Agent M 1IOn will he in town several days talking over the situation with Jivestock men |
