Show THE APOSTLES SLANDER JOHN W TAYLOR IS CALLED TO ACCOUNT FOB IT Miss Jamison Calls Upon Him to Withdraw His False Accusation Silence Will Not Answer The Tribune has received the following follow-ing letters In reference to Apostle John AAr Taylors slanderous address at Richmond Rich-mond and prints them with the suggestion sugges-tion that it is high time the apostle were heard from Mr Clemensons Letter Mr John AV Taylor Salt Lake City S Utah Dear Slr1 wrote you an open letter on May 1st which appeared In the Issue of The Tribune of May 3rd in which I asked you to either prove your allegations against the character of Miss Nellie Jamison or publicly retract your statements In the absence of any word from you on the subject I have had an interview with Miss Jamison relative to your charges against her and she assures me that there is no truth In your aspersions and charges This the session of this church Is bound lo believe In absence of proof to the contrary amid hence must hold her Innocent In-nocent and in good standing especially as she had written you demanding retraction re-traction and apology In absence of Incriminating In-criminating evidence and you have Ignored her letter and so either acknowledged your own error In what you said or subjected her to further contempt by 1 youi silence In view ot jour apparent refusal to right this matter mat-ter Miss Jamison has given me a copy of her letter to you which I hero subjoin sub-join and which will let the public see her position in the premises and give you the opportunity of such answer as you sec lit to make N E CURMT5NSON Logan Utah May 7 1000 Miss Jamisons Letter Richmond Utah April 29 1900 Juhn V Taylor Esq Salt Lake City Dear SlrI trust that you will not think it presumptive on my part to write you at this time My reason for so doing is the fact that as I have been Informed you made a personal attack I on mo In your address at the priesthood priest-hood meeting held In Richmond Utah Monday morning April 2J 1100 Now Mr Taylor 1 will be more fall with you than you were with me in that 1 now ask you personally what JuBtUleatlon you have to offer for publicly abusing a person whom you have never met I have resided in Richmond several months and have formed acquaintance with a great many good honest upright people people whom I believe worship Deity according to the dictates of their own conscience and at the same time have been willing to accord others the like privilege unmolested And on that account have been favorably impressed with your people and for one can truthfully say I have never said aught but good of your people and I confess to you frankly that it wus a surprise to mo when S learned of your extremely narrowminded address It seems to me that before you made a public assault on the Literal club that served you for a text fiom whlfh to sneak von might at least In Justice to yourself huve Inquired of any one of the twenty young ladies who arcmembers of the club as to tIme facts in the case Now for your Information I will say hat you are mistaken when you say this literary club Is a secret society and further you are equally mistaken when you accuse me of presuming to be a leader among the young ladles of this city It is true however that I have associated somewhat with the young ladies of Richmond and have found them to be perfect ladles in every respect re-spect upright and honest I also take the liberty of saying that you never were so badly mistaken in your life as you were when you said that these drieduj old maids are among you for no good And you further stated that we were teaching the daughters of Israpl voiuuthlng which I desm too pr nlelous to write Now Mr Taylor I brand that statement as false It could not have been prompted by a Christ like spirit 1 am no more a believer in pernicious practices than you possibly possi-bly may be 1 P ml favor lo live a good clean upright and honorable life your statement to the contrary notwithstanding notwith-standing I have not uttered one sentence sen-tence or sentiment to my associates here that I would not have the searchlight search-light of heaven shine upon I confess I was somewhat astonished at you an apostle of tho Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints resorting to such a tlradi of abuse and misrepresentation when you so constantly deprecate what you believe your own people have suf fered from like cause But so far as I am concerned 1 shall endeavor never to misrepresent any of Gods creatures and shall endeavor to make my mission mis-sion on earth the same as that of our Savior 5 o Peace on earth good will luwiird men But when men make It their unmanly busings to Injure my character I shall defend myself with such means as God has placed at my command Trusting that you will sec < iho absolute abso-lute necessIty of withdrawing your false B < UPOtlon against an unoffending girl 1 r mnin bjiu r < ly jours for thrt right NELLIE JAMISON |
